Introducing Elisabeth Hager, MD, the WRBHO’s Physician Advisor! Dr. Hager joined the WRBHO as Physician Advisor in April. We are pleased to have her as a part of the tea. Here is a brief introduction to Dr. Hager… in her own words…. We have a wonderful opportunity to make a real difference in the care of many patients and I am thrilled to be part of the WRBHO team. I arrived at medicine in a roundabout way, starting out as a Sociologist of Health studying health systems as complex organizations, followed by a stint as a Physician’s Assistant in primary care and later, in an effort to qualify for more research grants, I applied to medical school. Even here, my path to Psychiatry took some time as I planned to be an Internist (I was a Sociologist after all…what was all this Psychiatry stuff about anyway?) My Psychiatry clerkship was put off to the very end of my fourth year and I was already looking for Medicine Residency Programs when I saw what I needed to do. I had never witnessed the degree of suffering as is experienced by those suffering from mental illness. And what makes it all the more difficult is the reality that many of these patients suffer alone. 1 Families and society are often put off by the symptoms, or afraid of them, leaving the sick without support. Here was a place where I could make a difference. I did my Residency at URMC and have worked in Rochester in many capacities, as an attending at RPC, as Chief of Psychiatry at Unity BH, as Medical Director at Huther Doyle, as Chairman and acting CEO of the Rochester Community IPA and in private practice, just to mention a few. I even spent the last decade starting and running biomedical engineering companies, but that’s a different story. In many ways my joining the WRBHO through Beacon Health Strategies is a return to by roots as well as an integration of my interests and experiences. I enjoy looking at healthcare from a systems perspective and to manage patient care from the level of the population as well as the individual... I enjoy working on a team and collaborating with physicians and other treatment providers. I am an educator at heart (did I mention I taught at RIT for 12 years and at UR Simon School (entrepreneurship) for 3 years) and I look forward to many interesting conversations. But that’s enough about me. I look forward to getting to know each of you better over the coming months. Thank you for making me feel welcome at the WRBHO.
