On the Square Carlisle, Pennsylvania HYMN NOTES: ♫ The text of our opening hymn was written by Walter Chalmers Smith (1824-1908). Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, he was ordained in 1850, and was moderator of the Free Church of Scotland in 1893—it’s 50th anniversary year. The tune ST. DENIO is a Welsh folk melody from the early 19th century. ♫ William Williams, known as the “Isaac Watts of Wales,” wrote the text of our second hymn. Full of biblical imagery, it was published in 1745. The tune CWM RHONDDA, written by John Hughes (18731932), was used as the setting for “Angels, from the Realms of Glory”. ♫ The text of today’s closing hymn is striking in its forthright-ness and its recollection of the biblical “call” texts. The tone seems to suggest Jesus calling disciples (Mark 1:16-20). It is set to the Scottish traditional tune KELVINGROVE.
