Strategic Enrollment Management Committee May 10, 2010 Call to Order: Jack Bautsch convened the meeting at 2:35 p.m. Attendance: Richard Mellroth, Pete Lortz, Gary Gorland, Jack Bautsch, Alice Melling, Marci Myer, Kim Chapman, Carol Summers, Cesily Crowser, Mary Ellen O’Keeffe. Guest: Lori Casile Technology and ESL Students: Lori Casile described a problem that has recently become more apparent, namely the need that ESL students have for computing support, need that that exceeds the resources of her computer lab staff to adequately address. The numbers of ESL students using open computer labs has increased (1) as ESL/IEP faculty have introduced more computing skills in higher level classes, and (2) since what was once a dedicated ESL computer lab is now used as a classroom. A related development adds to the problem, namely that the number of basic computing classes offered to this student population has been reduced. As the discussion progressed, it was suggested that the problem goes beyond the ESL student population and beyond the open labs. Many returning students also lack basic computing skills, and both The Loft and the library also report student need for basic computing support that exceeds staff resources. These ideas were suggested as possible approaches to the problem: Restore basic computing sections within the ABE/ESL area Approach both John Bowers (Workforce) and Heidi Stuber (continuing ed) the availability of lowcost basic computing classes within their areas Ask the Tutoring Advisory Committee its perspective on creating a group of tutors for basic computing Minutes of Previous Meetings: In an effort to create an archive of SEM minutes, Jack asked if anyone had notes from meetings in February and March for which no minutes currently exist. Carol and Richard offered their notes from the March 8th meeting. Later it was remembered that the February meeting had been cancelled. Membership: In response to Jack’s question, it was confirmed that both Alice Melling and Gary Gorland joined the committee in March 2009. Richard Mellroth will serve through the end of the school year, and a new student will be identified in the fall for the 2010-11 year. Pete will try again to find a developmental math faculty to join the committee. Jack reported that John Bowers has indicated he will miss spring quarter meetings due to conflicts with his graduate program. Strategic Initiatives: Gary Gorland and others updated the committee on a number of initiatives for which Gary is providing leadership. College Readiness: Previous college readiness task forces have been merged into a new College Readiness Committee led by Gary. Additional members have been added. They have had one meeting and are discussing exactly what their purpose is. Is it a work group? Is it a Faculty Inquiry Group? Is it some combination of the two? Gary believes a consensus will emerge in subsequent discussions. IBEST: The college is still interested in developing a new generation of IBEST programs. Under consideration are accounting, pharmacy assisting, and HVAC. In each case, short-term certificates (one year or less) are the preferred model. Developmental Math: The math department has been awarded a 29 month grant through SBCTC to increase student learning and progression through developmental math courses. Pete Lortz described two threads within the grant: (1) developing a learning resources bank to contextualize math problems, a bank that could be used within all sections of MATH084, MATH085, and MATH098,and (2) developing a model in which a cohort of students integrates the study of developmental math with HDC courses in fall and winter quarters, and with a college-level course (ENV150) in spring quarter). For the “contextualizing curriculum” aspect of the grant, the faculty envisions partnering with community groups such as Friends of Careek Park to apply math to “real world” issues/concerns. This project also involves a re-examination of the Compass math placement test and the development of common pre- and post-instruction assessment instruments for use across multiple sections of the same courses throughout the developmental sequence. Providing leadership to the grant are Gary, Pete, and math faculty Denise Brannan and Deanna Li Transitions Fair: Jamila Barton is spearheading this effort. The fair/conference will be held from 5-7 p.m. on May 26 and from 9-1 on May 27th. Incoming president Mark Mitsui will welcome students at the opening sessions. It is meant to provide ESL, ABE, IEP and development students critical information about college-level coursework and culture. A number of workshops will be presented by faculty and SDS staff, including College 101, ENG101 success, math success; exploring career pathways, college financing, U.S. classroom culture. Campus tours will be offered as well. The target audiences are ELS levels 4-6, IEP levels 4-6, ABE, and pre-college English and math students. About 75% of the ABE and ESL faculty teaching levels 4-6 are including the fair as part of their classes. Interest is high and attendance is expected to be strong. Integrated Learning Workshop: Emily and Gilles from the Washington Center are conducting a workshop on integrative learning on June 4, from noon to 4:00 p.m. It is open to all interested faculty. Budget: Gary distributed a handout showing the SAI budget and expenditures to date. Pete was surprised that so little of the allocated math tutoring money has been spent and will investigate why that is the case. Mini-grants: Gary reported that South campus offers mini grants up to $3,000 for to staff who propose a strategy to support student progression and increase the number of momentum points earned. He suggested that North may want to consider a similar approach. Marketing/Admission/Outreach: Carol reported that MAO is working on an updated orientation and campus tour video Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 4:15 p.m. Minutes by Jack Bautsch Appendix Strategic Enrollment Management May 10, 2010 AGENDA Minutes of previous meetings February, March –anyone got anything?
