Point Loma High School Course Syllabus English as a Second Language (ESL) Contact Information: Elliott Savitz Voicemail: 619-223-3121 ex. 4857 Email: esavitz@sandi.net Room 857 Course Description: ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) 1-2 Description: ESL 1-2 Literacy Block provides a balanced approach to English language development, using communication-based, content-based, and literature- based activities. Instruction focuses on oral/aural activities to ensure comprehension of concepts and vocabulary. Students learn to understand conversation on a variety of everyday subjects and to ask for clarification when needed. The emphasis at this level is on listening comprehension and oral production in English; students are introduced to reading and writing through a variety of strategies appropriate for the beginning level of proficiency. Course content is based on the Common Core English language development standards for the emerging proficiency level. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) 3-4, 5-6 Description: This course continues the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English with emphasis on the reading and writing processes. Students communicate ideas and information orally with increased confidence, demonstrating their understanding of idiomatic expressions, using different registers appropriately, and communicating comfortably in new and unfamiliar settings. Students read and write across a variety of genres, applying knowledge of language to derive meaning from text, and express themselves appropriately for different audiences and purposes. This course prepares students to succeed in the Mainstream English Cluster (grade-level English courses) by helping them develop appropriate academic language and learning strategies. Course content is based on the Common Core English language development standards for the expanding proficiency level. Note-taking will be conducted in class using interactive notebooks Discussion and writing assignments will be connected with real world applications Texts ● Keys to Learning: Skills and Strategies for Newcomers by Chamot Keatley Anstrom Supplementary texts Oxford Picture Dictionary or Bilingual Dictionary of choice Variety of literature and nonfiction texts provided by teacher Independent Reading books of choice Materials: ● A notebook ● pens and pencils ● independent reading book Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: ESL 1-2: ● Demonstrate oral language skills necessary for communicating successfully in all content areas. ● Comprehend English spoken by peers and teachers. ● Develop basic reading and writing skills for success in school. ESL 3-4: ● Demonstrate English skills necessary to apply standard grammar structures. ● Demonstrate English skills necessary for development of pronunciation skills. ● Further develop reading and writing skills. ESL 5-6 ● Demonstrate English skills necessary for effective interpersonal communication (such as via telephone interviews, or written conversation) ● Demonstrate English skills necessary to communicate effectively on a variety of topics and in spoken and written forms. ● Read and comprehend at grade level. In addition to their basis upon the California Department of Education Common Core standards for Literacy, these objectives are also modeled after the literacy focus of San Diego City Schools, as well as the goals of students, parents and faculty. Classroom Expectations: In addition to following all PLHS policies, students are expected to: ● Arrive on time ● Be prepared to learn with required materials ● Respect yourself and others (No food, hats, or electronic devices turned on) ● Uphold the academic honesty policy ● Be ready to contribute to classroom discussions and activities Communication I am always available to discuss the progress of your child or to help problem solve any concerns you might have. ● E- mail - I will respond within twenty-four hours. Students should also email with any questions or concerns. ● Conferences: I am available for a conference upon request. Students should also attend parent teacher conferences. ● Tutoring: I am available during advisory, every day at lunch, and by appointment.
