Candidate for Publications Editor CARLY HUERTA Employed by: Fort Mill School District 4 Current Position and Responsibilities: ESL Instructor for the FMSD’s high schools Professional Background: BA – English; MA – Curriculum & Instruction w/ Emphasis in ESL Taught English in Singapore for 3 years Taught English/ESL/SDAIE and Drama in California and then in SC Currently teaching ESL in Fort Mill Over 16 years of teaching experience Awards and Achievements: Debate Coach, Middle School Public Debate Program, CA Conference Presenter, ACSI Regional Conference English Department Chair, WCCS, 2009 - 2011 Educator of the Year, WCCS, 2010-2011 Personal Educational Philosophy: I love what Nikos Kazantzakis, author of Zorba the Greek, said about teaching: “True teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross; then, having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create their own.” My role as an ESL teacher is to construct a bridge between what my students know and what they need to know for their next level of understanding. Each bridge is unique and particular to the individual student. Having a working relationship with my students is essential to determining what they need and how I can help them get there. Contrary to what some people think, my job is not just to teach my students the English language, but to help them survive the rigors of an American high school curriculum while adapting to a new country and culture. 1 I see my role as an ESL educator as a series of partnerships between myself and my students, myself and the mainstream teachers, myself and the parents of my students, and the mainstream teachers and the ESL students. In order for my students to be successful, there must be open communication, respect, and trust. Inside and outside of my classroom, I must be an advocate for my students. I need to be their voice when they cannot speak up for themselves. I want my students to feel empowered and entitled to the same advantages as the rest of the student population. Instead of seeing their status as an ELL as a stumbling block, I want them to see it as a stepping stone. Why would you be the right person for this position? I am passionate about ESL and would like to see this organization continue to grow and thrive as a support for ESL Teachers. I am organized, punctual and dependable. I have extensive experience in research, writing, and compiling newsletters. I would be honored to be a member of the Carolina TESOL board! 2
