Objectives - ‫الهدف‬
The present project aimed to:
1- Provide the first molecular epidemiological evidence of any possible association of
MMPs gene polymorphism with the risk of lung cancer in the presence of carcinogenic
exposure in the Lebanese population.
2- Help us to assess whether there is a role for MMPs in altering cellular
microenvironment, thereby facilitating tumor development. Understanding the role of
such genetic polymorphisms in host susceptibility would help improve screening,
treatment, surveillance, and prevention of lung cancer.
Achievements -‫أالنجازات المحققة‬
The present study is the first to examine the relationship between genetic polymorphism of
MMPs and lung cancer within the Lebanese population.
Our data clearly demonstrated an association between the MMP3 5A allele
and lung cancer (OR= 2.7, 95% CI = 1.3-5.3; Fisher’s P-value = 0.005).

Perspectives – ‫آفاق البحث‬
The identification of genetic risk factors and susceptibility gene polymorphisms in the
Lebanese population is essential for better lung cancer screening, prevention, and
treatment.
Our data clearly demonstrates an association between the MMP3 5A allele and lung
cancer.
People carrying the 5A allele are at higher risk to develop lung cancer than people
carrying the 6A allele. Therefore, MMP-3 5A allele might be a risk factor for lung
cancer, Indeed these people should avoid additional risk factors such as smoking and
exposure to carcinogens.

Abstract - ‫موجز عن نتائج البحث‬
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of enzymes that degrade extracellular
matrix components and are involved in the development and progression of cancer. Lung cancer
is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Lebanon. This study was undertaken to investigate
the association between -1171(5A>6A) polymorphism in the promoter of MMP3 gene and the
susceptibility to lung cancer in a Lebanese population. The MMP3 polymorphism was
investigated in 41 lung cancer patients and 51 unrelated healthy controls using PCR-RFLP
technique. We found a significant association between MMP3 -1171 5A allele and lung cancer
(OR= 2.7, 95% CI = 1.3-5.3; Fisher’s P-value = 0.005). This study may form an additional
evidence for association of MMP3 enzyme and genetic susceptibility to lung cancer.
