Woody Biomass Project Update #2

News and Info This Week:

1) Biomass Harvesting Begins!

2) Pre-harvest Inventory Update

3) Reminder: Woody Biomass Harvesting Workshop and Equipment Demo

1) Biomass Harvesting Begins!

On Friday, August 4th, the first piece of biomass harvesting equipment in this study will enter the Superior National Forest. The biomass harvester, operating the Ponsse EH25 biomass harvesting head. Read

Ponsse's brochure about the harvester head at: http://www.ponsse.com/images/brochures_pdf/Brochures_eng/EH25_ENG.pdf

The harvester will be operating at sites off of the Caribou Trail, near

Grand Marais, MN. For a chance to see it in action, check out the workshop being offered next week (info item #3). If you're unable to attend the workshop but are interested in observing the harvests, contact Katie Marshall at 612-870-3407 or kmarshall@iatp.org

2) Pre-harvest Inventory Update

Mike Demchik of the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point is leading the biophysical monitoring portion of this project. He and his students have been collecting data for the pre-harvest inventory at each of the harvest sites. When the harvests are complete, they'll return to the sites to collect post-harvest data and analyze the effects of the harvests on amounts of slash, snags, soils and other biophysical characteristics of the sites. Initial pre-harvest analysis will soon be available. Watch for this and photos from the harvests sites-- posted on the project web page soon!

3) Reminder: Woody Biomass Harvesting Workshop and Equipment Demo

Don't forget the excellent opportunity to learn more about this project and woody biomass harvesting in general at the workshop being offered

Monday, August 7th from 9am - 4pm in Grand Marais, MN. You'll have a chance to hear from a variety of emerging experts in the world of biomass harvesting and also spend time in the field watching harvests take place.
