FROM THE HILLS TO THE SEA “ mountain bike 5 or 6 days ”
The Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia is located in the north-east of Italy, overlooking the
Adriatic Sea and bordering the states of Austria and Slovenia.
The Friuli Venezia Giulia region is a small undiscovered paradise, where sea, mountains, hills and
plains are all within easy reach, being only a few kilometres apart.
An ideal destination for travelling on a mountain bike, the territory is a concentration of nature, art,
history, food and wine.
The route follows the Tagliamento river. The Tagliamento River Park is a protected area, characterized
by natural springs and rare orchids.
This package proposes to you either a route ending in the Habsburgic town Trieste or in Grado, the
Sunny Island on the Adriatic Sea.
Anyway, it will be a trip trough one of the most beautiful European areas!
Day 1, Arrival - Welcome to Gemona del Friuli
Meeting with our guide, who will welcome the guests.
Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2,
(about 55 km / about 300 mt. climb)
Breakfast. We are going to start our adventure and we are going to experience the wet climate of the
Tagliamento River surrounded by beautiful birch wood and cornfields. The quiet atmosphere of the
untouched landscape will be only broken by the wildlife. We will be among beautiful hills of Friuli
Collinare with superbe pictures on plains and on Prealps amphitheatre. Here you can find magic
landscapes that inspired poets and writers such as Ippolito Nievo, Pierpaolo Pasolini and Ermes di
Colloredo.
Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3,
(about 59 km.)
Breakfast. On apshalt and dirt road we are going to peddle along the banks of the Tagliamento River,
the most important River of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Following along an ancient Roman path, we will be
delighted by the dense birch trees, vineyard and lush meadow, until we will reach the Adriatic Sea and
Marano Lagunare, which was an important town both for the Roman Empire and later for the Venetian
Republic. The buildings from the XV century show a strong Venetian influence.
Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4,
(about 44 km.)
Breakfast. By boat for a "photo-safari" in the lagoon, exploring and getting familiar with the beauty of
the Stella River surroundings, we will experience the beauties of the swamps. The strength of the
vegetation and the vigor of the climate will inebriate you.
Snack in a typical fishermen hut in the lagoon!
Our route will arrive to the archeological Roman town of Aquileia, city that was awarded with the prize
from the UNESCO for world cultural heritage.
From Aquileia, we will arrive to Grado, the so-called "Sunny Island" of the Adriatic Sea. The road to
Grado is in the lagoon and is very suggestive
Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5,
Breakfast. Back to Gemona by bus.

TOUR EXTENSION TO TRIESTE
Day 4,
(about 66 km.)
Breakfast. By boat for a "photo-safari" in the lagoon, exploring and getting familiar with the beauty of
the Stella River surroundings, we will experience the beauties of the swamps. The strength of the
vegetation and the vigor of the climate will inebriate you.
Our route will arrive to the archeological Roman town of Aquileia, city that was awarded with the prize

From Aquileia, we will arrive to Redipuglia.
Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5,
(about 55 km. - about 600 mt climb)
Breakfast. Leaving from the Military Memorial of Redipuglia, our itinerary -following the ancient "Via
Gemina"- will go through monuments, boundary stones, museums and places of the firing lines, that
will be reached riding your mountain bike, cycling across the Carso. The calcareous rocks moulded by
the rain, the dolinas (areas in which the subsoil has given in) and the flora, mainly consisting of
blackberry bushes and shrubs, are typical of this area. On the way you can have a break in one of the
many "osmize", where you can taste the typical Carso-wine and typical sorts of cheese.
Before ending this tour, you will arrive to the impressive coast overlooking the Gulf of Trieste: a
spectacular sight over the sea. The Miramare Castle is part of this marvellous landscape.
Dinner, walking in Trieste by night and on its Piazza Unità d' Italia, one of the most beautiful Italian
squares. Overnight stay.
Day 6,
Breakfast. Back to Gemona by bus.
