Materials and Supplies for Recreation What we use and how to order In the recreation program, we use a number of supplies for the maintenance of our facilities. The document is intended to give some basic information on these supplies and the suppliers. Paint The consumable product we use the most of. The Province of BC has negotiated a Master Standing Offer with General Paint, which entitles the MoF to purchase paint for a price, which is about 1/3 the retail price. The paint must be purchased from a General Paint store (not a dealer) to qualify for this price. In the RSI, General Paint stores are located in Cranbrook, Kamloops, (250 372 7818) Kelowna, Penticton, and Prince George. When purchasing paint, the MSO number must be quoted, at present this number is 140066. There are storage issues with paint. It can't be frozen and in the case of oil based paints, they are considered flammable and most be treated as such which means there are limitations with respect to how much can be stored and where it can be stored. Oil based paints are a flammable liquid and must be stored in the same manner as gasoline. Generally paint should be purchased in the spring and consumed during the field season. Some districts have converted to latex-based paint to overcome the storage issues while others are still using oil-based paints. Note that toilets, tables and signs supplied by region since 2003 are painted with latex paints. In talking to General Paint, the new latex formulations are designed to cover older oil based paints, provided that the surface is well weathered or has been roughed up so the latex paint will adher. The following table (2004) details, to the best of our knowledge, the paints used by RSI Districts. This isn't to say a district can't convert to another product, this table details what the formulations are out there. Janitorial Supplies When it comes to janitorial supplies, there are 2 sources for the products we use. The first source is the Ministry of Management Services, Product Distribution Centre. They carry toilet paper, a deodoriser and heavy-duty garbage bags at competitive prices with shipping included in the price. To order these items you need to contact the Product Distribution Centre and set up an account, if your district hasn't done so. Once registered with the Product Distribution Centre, your district will have a password, which allows for online ordering by using the following website: http://pss.online.gov.bc.ca/pdc/ The address of the Product Distribution Centre is: Province of British Columbia Ministry of Management Services Product Distribution Centre 2370 United Boulevard Coquitlam, B.C. The items most commonly ordered from these janitorial suppliers are: Plastic Deodorant Block Cabinets (deodorant block holders) Scent Blocks (to go in the above holders) "Cherry" odour appears to be the preferred choice. Detergent, All Purpose (to clean washrooms). A dry powder type is recommended as it doesn't freeze or leak in storage or transport. One brand sold by Zep is "Detergent, All Purpose, Easy Packs, 2 tubs/case, 90 pkgs. /tub", which is conveniently packaged. A case will do about 180 site visits. The price is about $47.00/tub. A toilet enzyme (to break down outhouse deposits to extend toilet life) A dry powder type is recommended as it doesn't freeze or leak in storage or transport. A recommended brand is Sanizyme, which comes in a 26-oz container. The price/container is about $13.00. Toilet Stems There are 2 sources of Toilet Stems in this region; one supplier uses plastic the other Fiberglas. Fiberglas stems are preferred, as they are rigid, easier to clean, can be repaired and stand up better. Plastic stems tend to be about $110 each (price varies by the amount ordered). Fiberglass stems are about $145 (price varies with amount ordered). The two suppliers are: For Plastic Toilet Stems For Fiberglass Toilet Stems Alcaro Plastics 920 Leathead Road Kelowna, BC V1X 2J8 Rebel Fiberglass P.O. Box 3186 Kamloops, B.C. They are expensive to install, difficult to maintain and privacy is not an issue. In many cases, all that is required is a stool over a hole. An Edmonton based firm makes such a toilet and they have been extensively used by BC Parks, National Parks and in backcountry BCFS Campsites . A similar design is also used on canoeing campsites in the Parks in Ontario. These toilets can be ordered from: Zeebest Plastics of Canada Inc. 11941 121st. Street Edmonton, AB T5L 4H7 phone 780 447 5222 1 800 465 5222 fax 780 455 9448 E-mail sales@zeebest.com Website http//www.zeebest.com The model we use is the Garden Throne Model which sells for $275/unit (price varies by the amount ordered) Toilet Pit Liners When installing toilets, the pits are lined to stop them from collapsing. In the BCFS we use plastic culvert pipe 900 mm wide x 2 meters long to line our toilet pits. The Province of BC has negotiated a Master Standing Offer with Armtech, which entitles the MoF to purchase culverts for a pre-determined price. When purchasing culverts the MSO number (141170-1) must be quoted. The product we use is described as: "900 mm, HDPE Pipe, BOSS 2000, Plain End". The price is $164.48/meter ($329 for 2 meters) plus freight. In RSI, with freight, a liner costs about $500 delivered. Toilets can be ordered froom: Armtec Suite 245 10451 Shellbridge Way Richmond, B.C. V6X 2W8 phone 604 278 3881 fax 604 278 8530 email amessina@armtec.com To make the toilets easier to pump, it is recommended that about 2" - 3" of concrete be poured in the bottom of hole so seal it, this will assist in retaining the moisture and make the toilet easier to pump when the time comes.
