Steve Howard
Steve’s educational background is in psychology (B.Sc. Hons), ergonomics (M.Sc) and human computer interaction (PhD). He has taught widely in both the UK and
Australia on the issue of usable software and human-computer interaction (HCI).
He started work as an engineer with British Nuclear Fuels Ltd and later held research positions at the National Physical Laboratory (UK) and GEC Marconi. He has consulted on human factors and HCI to Rank Xerox, British Aerospace, DSTO and others.
Steve is currently Research Group Leader of the Interaction Design Group at the
University of Melbourne.
Steve's current research interests include usability engineering methods and practice, usability 'out of the office' and approaches to IS innovation. He has published widely in the national and international literature and has been an invited speaker and keynote speaker at a number of usability conferences. He has been the national secretary of the Australian HCI group (CHISIG) twice and has three times been technical chair of the national Australian usability conference (OZCHI). He has received research funding from diverse sources, including the Australian Research
Council, DITARD, Novell, Sensis, TELSTRA, GEC/Marconi, Rank Xerox and
VicRoads.
With his partner Anna he has a 14 year old son Alec, and a dog Rusty. He plays terrible didjeridoo but cooks great dhal!
Dr Jennie Carroll
Dr. Jennie Carroll has been involved in the field of information systems for eight years, initially as a student and then over the previous three years as an academic. She has produced journal and conference papers related to the improvement of information systems development and implementation processes.
She has consulted in the public and private sectors on the feasibility and requirements for information systems. She has supervised PhD, Masters and Honours projects, most of which have involved the use of intensive research methods and is also a senior lecturer in the Department of Information Systems at the University of Melbourne.
Dr Frank Vetere
Dr. Frank Vetere is a member of the Interaction Design Group at the University of
Melbourne. He has worked in the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) for 7
years. He has published papers on multimedia, redundant interface design, interactivity and scenario-based design. He has worked as a Human-Computer
Interaction specialist in large and small organisations. He is currently the technical cochair for the Australian Human Factors conference (a joint HCI and ergonomics conference).
John Murphy
John Murphy is an associate director with Novell Pty Ltd in Australia. He works as a specialist in the interface and interaction design area as part of the Novell systems integrations group. This multi-disciplinary, project based group works primarily on internet and software projects.
He has over 20 years of experience in the various areas of human computer interaction, computer science and engineering, has written and contributed to conference papers in HCI and is an active member and speaker of the Australian HCI group.
John has a Masters degree in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Ergonomics from University College London, a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from the
University of Western Australia and a Graduate Diploma of Computer Science from
Curtin University of Western Australia.
Jane Peck
Jane Peck is the Program Manager of The Customers of the Future.
She has many years experience in market research, advertising and marketing.
Jane has worked as a market research consultant for over 20 years handling both qualitative and quantitative projects in a wide variety of consumer and commercial areas of interest.
Jane has a degree in Psychology (B.A. University of Melbourne) and has recently added studies in the area of human-computer interaction and information technology.
She is a member of both the Market Research Society of Australia and CHISIG
