Saint Hugh’s News Easter 2009 Green Flag Award Following an inspection of the school on January 21st we were awarded the Green Flag for reaching certain waste reduction standards. On February 25th three members of the Green School committee, Noel McGovern (5th), Michael Crawford (3rd) and Lewis Bailey (2nd) travelled to the Galway Bay Hotel in Salthill to collect the flag on behalf of the school. Well done to all pupils who worked so hard throughout the year to achieve this award. We now intend (L-R) Lewis, Noel and Michael display the striving for the second Green Flag which involves energy Green Flag at the Galway Bay Hotel in awareness in the school. Salthill. Puppet Show th On January 30 . the school was visited by a travelling puppet show who performed, ‘Little Red Riding Hood.’ Art Display During the month of February the Solas Art Gallery in Ballinamore framed and displayed pictures drawn by pupils from primary schools all over Leitrim. Among the exhibition were pictures from the pupils of Saint Hugh’s N.S. (L-R) Brad Hogan, Enda Keegan, Michaela Rogan, Aaron McCawley and Amber Fee (all 2nd Class) display their artwork which featured in the Solas Art Exhibition. Megan Fee and Roisin McGovern (6th) Fair Play Exhibition The pupils of Fourth, Fifth and Sixth class were visited by an artist called Anna Reitberger on February 18th. She guided the pupils as they created art works from plastic footballs, plasticine and other materials. The pupils’ work is been displayed as part of the ‘Fair Play Exhibition’ in the Manorhamilton Glens Centre from March 30th until April 1st. Special Olympics Leitrim Fundraiser A non-uniform day was held on Friday, February 27th for ‘Special Olympics Leitrim’. Great credit is due to all the pupils as €103·60 was raised on the day for this very worthy cause. Summer Term Clothes Collection The school intends to hold another clothes collection during the Summer term. We would be grateful if you could redirect all clothes earmarked for a clothes bank to the school. Please send them in at any stage as we can store them in the school until collection. Gaelic Football Coaching Sessions Coaching sessions with Jimmy Houlihan resumed during the Easter term. Jimmy coaches all the classes in the school Gaelic football skills on a weekly basis. Confirmation Congratulations to Megan Fee, Sean McGourty, Padraig Clarke and Brian McMorrow (6th Class) who made their Confirmation on Friday, March 20th in St. Hugh’s Church, Ballinaglera. First Confession On Wednesday, March 25th Amber Fee, Michaela Rogan, Brad Hogan, Enda Keegan and Aaron McCawley (2nd. Class) made their First Confession. Well done to all involved. School Choir During the term a school choir was formed under the direction of Aedín McLoughlin. Well done to all the pupils involved for their great performance at the Confirmation ceremony. Thanks again to Aedín for all the effort and time she gives the pupils. Vegetable garden This term all pupils have been busy in the vegetable garden. The seeds of potatoes, carrots and beetroot have been sown in the various beds so hopefully we will have a bumper crop! The Incredible Edibles The pupils of 1st- 6th Class The Junior Infants Class at the vegetable garden. are involved in the ‘Incredible Edibles’ challenge organised by Agri Aware. The pupils must grow potatoes, cabbages, lettuce, scallions and strawberries indoors from seed. All going well, by early June the pupils should see the results of their labour. Fifth and Sixth Class Blitz Fifth and Sixth class took part in a GAA blitz involving three other local national schools, Tarmon, Creevelea and Drumkeerin in Ballinaglera football pitch on March 30th. The pupils from the four schools were mixed up together to form four teams for a mini-league. Thanks to the parents who provided transport on the day. The Cumann na mBunscoil School League will start shortly after the Easter Fifth and Sixth Class at the blitz holidays.
