JOB DESCRIPTION - HEAD BOYS BASKETBALL COACH
Listed below is the basic job description for the Huntington North High School head
boys’ basketball coach. The immediate responsibilities will be as follows:
 Meet with middle school players and their coaches to develop positive working
relationships.
 Meet with returning and new players from the high school to establish his
expectations.
 Hire and organize the high school boys’ basketball staff.
 Plan and schedule activities in line with the IHSAA guidelines.
 Inventory equipment and place orders if necessary.
Head Boys Basketball Coach
The head coach is responsible for the HCCSC boys’ basketball program, which
includes organizing and giving direction to coaches throughout the entire program
including elementary, middle school and high school programs. The head coach will
require that the lower level coaches adhere to his philosophy, techniques, strategies,
and style in order to have a cohesive program. This should insure a smooth transition
for the student-athlete as they progress through the feeder system. The head coach
will evaluate all coaches in the school corporation boys’ basketball program and discuss
evaluations with the athletic director and with the respective middle school
administrators. The head coach will meet with the athletic director to discuss
equipment ordering, scheduling, and to recommend candidates for coaching positions
within his program. The head coach will be a positive motivator with his athletes and
staff. He will project a positive image with the media as well as with the parents and our
community. The head coach will take an interest in and be involved in community age
group programs, which are feeder systems to his sport.
Specific Responsibilities
1. Manage and coordinate entire boys basketball program at all schools
- assistant coaches
-workouts/practices/open facilities
-contests
2. Start practice on the designated IHSAA starting date.
3. Hold a pre-season meeting with all prospective athletes.
4. Communicate with parents in regard to team rules and athletic department
guidelines.
5. Attend and run an organized practice on all scheduled practice dates.
6. Assist the athletic director in preparing for all home contests.
7. Attend required IHSAA rules interpretation meetings.
8. Turn in a roster to the athletic office during the pre-season.
9. Check eligibility of all athletes before first contest.
10. Assist the athletic director in scheduling.
11. Assist in the transportation schedule.
12. Prepare an inventory of all equipment.
13. Evaluate all assistant coaches.
14. Conduct an off-season conditioning and/or open facility program.
15. Know and understand the student-athlete handbook.
16. Follow all rules in the coaching handbook.
17. Know, understand and follow all IHSAA rules.
18. Conduct an appropriate awards program for all high school players.
19. Attend all scheduled athletic department or coaching staff meetings.
In addition to responsibilities listed above, the head boys’ basketball coach is
responsible to conduct a summer camp for the school corporation, and coordinate the
boys’ basketball program for the entire school corporation.
