NRES/GEOG 400/600 International Issues for Water Development Fall Semester 2004 Graduate Student-Led Discussions/Lectures Each student enrolled for graduate credit in this class will be responsible for giving a brief lecture or leading brief discussion during two different classes. For this assignment, you will select two different papers from the additional readings list (from two different topics and dates) and, after closely reading the papers, you will prepare and give a brief lecture/discussion that incorporates the materials from the paper and relates the paper to other class readings, lectures, and discussions. Limit your lectures or discussions to ten minutes or less. Try to be innovative in how you interpret and present the materials to the class in the limited time you have. You may chose to do your presentation at the beginning, middle or end of the class period, based on a discussion with the instructor responsible for that class. The intent of this assignment is to provide you with greater depth of understanding in two specific aspects of international water resources through more extended reading and class preparation as well as provide you with an opportunity to get organized and practice public speaking. Each of the class discussions is worth a maximum of 100 points and you will receive written evaluation comments from the instructors for each discussion/lecture. You will be evaluated on: Style: clarity of presentation, visuals clear and effective (if used), ability to interpret and answer questions effectively Content: Synthesis of article reviewed; relation of article to class material Overall: Presentation effectiveness as a whole Sign Up List for Graduate Student-Led Discussions/Lectures Sign up for two class periods and write in name of paper you’ve chosen Date(s) Topics M 8/30 W 9/1 W 9/8 M 9/13 W 9/15 M 9/20 W 9/22 M 9/27 W 9/29 M 10/4 W 10/6 M 10/11 W 10/13 M 10/18 W 10/20 M 10/25 W 10/27 M 11/1 W 11/3 M 11/8 W 11/10 M 11/22 W 11/24 M 11/29 W 12/1 Hydrology review (LS) Irrigation (KB) Irrigation (KB) Dams (LS) Hydropower (LS) Urban, industrial, and water quality issues (LS) Urban, industrial, and water quality issues (LS) Neoliberal state & privatization of water infrastructure (KB) Neoliberal state & privatization of water infrastructure (KB) Water transfers, pricing, and markets (KB) Water transfers, pricing, and markets (KB) Women and water (KB) Religion and water (KB) Indigenous water rights, equity, justice (KB) Indigenous water rights, equity, justice (KB) Integrated water resources management (LS) Integrated water resources management (LS) Transboundary issues (KB) Transboundary issues (LS) Water and war (LS) Ecosystems and water (LS) Finding solutions and resolving conflicts (KB) Finding solutions and resolving conflicts (LS) Small scale water solutions (KB) Reevaluating water infrastructure (KB) Your Name & Paper Chosen to Review
