Job Description Effective June 2014 Job Title: Job Classification: Job Relationships: Job Summary: Veterinary Services Manager Full-time, salaried, exempt employee Reports to Executive Director Oversees the operations of all veterinary services which will include shelter animal spay/neuter, grant driven public spay/neuter, wellness programs and diagnosis/treatment of injured and/or ill animals. Participates in budget preparation and monitors adherence to approved budget. Trains, assigns duties, supervises, evaluates and assures adequate staffing to ensure the effectiveness of the department’s programs. Job Duties 1. Animal Care Perform daily activities of Center’s veterinary clinic including scheduling of surgeries, preparation of animals for surgery, assisting veterinarians during surgery, and monitoring the condition of animals after surgery. Maintain a system of record keeping for all animals treated at the Center. Supervise overall cleanliness of the medical suite and all equipment and kennels within. Perform medical supply inventory as required. Stock medical treatment areas. Work directly with the Center’s veterinarians to assure the safety and health of animals at the Center and ensure that all procedures are performed in a highly efficient and effective manner. Provide assistance to veterinarians and management staff with evaluations and management of medical and behavioral needs of animals in the Center. Oversees the treatment of Center animals. Perform and document routine health checks on all incoming animals including drawing and processing diagnostic work. Be able to recognize, properly document and treat common medical conditions as prescribed by a veterinarian. Be able to properly assess an injured or ill animal and provide supportive care as necessary. Provide routine and minor health care for animals housed at the Center, keep a log of medical treatment for each animal receiving treatment, ensure that daily treatments are completed as prescribed, monitor the progress of treatment, and bring to the veterinarian’s attention any that need to be rechecked. Assist with daily surgery. 2. Communication Communicate with animal caretakers regarding the daily health status of Center animals and procedures for animal health care problems. Assist adopters, the general public and Center management with routine health care information. Effectively share knowledge and understanding of common diseases and conditions. Instruct Foster Care Volunteers in procedures related to the health and welfare of the animals in their care. Represent the Center well by providing accurate information and good customer service. Recordkeeping – Maintain all records for compliance with federal, state and local pharmaceutical documentation. Prepare and coordinate the Medical Examiners inspection for the renewal of the Clinic Facility license. 3. Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor. 1 Qualifications/Requirements: Education/Experience: Preferred Associates degree (2 years college), Veterinary Technician degree or High School diploma required with a minimum of 4 years of work experience in the animal welfare field. Knowledge and Skills: Strong skills in self motivation and delegation Strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to relate and confer with the Veterinarian, managers, and associate staff in a positive and constructive way; exercise good judgment when dealing with the public and when making decisions in the absence of the Veterinarian. Ability to make sound judgments and work independently and in a team setting in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands. Proven organizational skills and attention to detail (effective record keeping ability). Ability to use sound judgment when dealing with confidential information. Support the mission of the McKamey Animal Center and be able to professionally advocate the Center’s position on issues. Knowledge of animal health, care and welfare and ability to work with animals. Strong animal handling skills. Knowledge of animal breeds and colors. Computer knowledge, experience with shelter software. Basic computing skills (Microsoft Windows/Office environment). Ability to maintain composure in an often stressful and emotional work environment. Other: Must be at least 21 years of age (required for insurance purposes); valid Tennessee Driver’s License and insurable driving record; willing to perform euthanasia of animals and to become euthanasia certified within 3 months of employment. Work Environment: Exposure to high noise levels, zoonotic diseases, and animal bites/scratches when handling animals; exposure to cleaning agents; exposure to all weather conditions when outdoors; bending, reaching, and walking up to 8 hours a day. Physical Activities: Occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds with assistance; potential for standing/walking up to ten hours a day; scrubbing kennels and mopping; sitting at a desk; driving a car; performing physical examinations on animals; animal restraint; handling syringes and needles.
