Animal Defense League – Veterinarian Technician Job Description Essential Job Function: Under general supervision, is responsible for performing and providing veterinary care for all animals cared for by the Animal Defense League. The veterinary technicians also assist the shelter veterinary(s) in caring designated care, treatment and needs as directed by the veterinarian. This position is also responsible for assisting a veterinarian with all surgeries completed at the Animal Defense League. Job Requirements: • High School Diploma or GED certificate • 1-year Vet Tech experience • Veterinarian technician certification is a strong plus • Must be able to work seven days a week, holidays and weekends with a rotating schedule and hours Essential Job Functions: • Assists veterinarians and staff in restraining animals for clinical exams • Screens animals for spay/neuter surgery and draws blood samples to examine for disease • Collects fecal samples and examines them for parasites • Prepares, sterilizes, and maintains surgical wetroom, surgery room, and surgery packs • Sedates and applies anesthesia; maintains all aspects of the surgery area • Monitors animal recovery from anesthesia • Examines animals when brought to ADL hospital and completes any needed procedures, documents on medical record and enters into shelter software • Assists in the training of personnel on basic responsibilities and animals handling • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required • Works with and explains veterinary care to customers and clients Knowledge, Skills and abilities: • Animal health procedures and practices • Animal anatomy and basic surgical techniques • Methods and procedures of animal care • Safety procedures and techniques • Tools and instruments used in veterinary medicine • Perform basic examinations of animals • Handle animals under all types of conditions and situations • Give injections and blood draw Veterinarian Technician 9.23.15 Physical demands and working conditions: Physical requirements include frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and greater than 50 pounds with assistance/ visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity. Subject to climbing, kneeling, lifting, sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and walking to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are inside and outside with frequent exposure to temperature variations, hazardous chemicals, noise, dirty environment, confining workspace and unfavorable odors.
