GW Graham Grad Newsletter May 2015 Volume 6 Welcome to the last installment of the Grizzly Grads News for Grads of 2015! Please make sure to read this entire newsletter so that you stay informed on what’s happening in regards to your grad year. This is also available on our website at http://gwgraham.sd33.org/ Important Grad Dates for 2015 May 29 - Grad Convocation tickets are now available at the school office. Each grad is allotted six. Deadline for pickup is the 29th of May. If you are unable to pick up by that date, send an email to gwgraham@sd33.bc.ca to have them held. After May 29, only two tickets will be guaranteed. Students who have requested additional tickets will be notified starting on June 1st if they will receive additional tickets. June 11 – Convocation Rehearsal at First Avenue Assembly. The day’s schedule will be different! The morning will consist of your first three periods. Buses will leave from the school at 11:50 and return by 2:20. You will be missing lunch, period 4 and tutorial. All grads are expected to attend. Bring your lunches along, as you’ll be eating them on the bus! June 10 & 11 – Grad gowns will be available for pickup from Student Services at lunch or after school. Grads or a parent or guardian must sign for the gown. Any pictures you want taken with the gown must be done before convocation on the 12th, as gowns will be returned immediately following the ceremony that evening. June 12 – Grad Convocation at First Avenue Assembly Church at 6:00 pm Cost is $40. This partially covers the cost of the event including rental of gown and cost of the cap (Grads keep the cap!) As soon as your student fees are paid in the office you can get up to 6 tickets. If you require more than 6 tickets in total, you need to put your name on a ticket request list in the office. If extra tickets are available, they will be given out on a first come, first served basis, as per the list. June 12 - Last day of classes for secondary courses. Final and Provincial exam week is between June 15th and 25th The final exam schedule will be available soon. Please note the date and time of your exams. If you miss a mandatory provincial (En 12, Comm 12, SS 11 or First Nations Studies 12), you will not pass the course until you have written the exam. The next sitting after June is August. June 15 – ALL students who won scholarships or bursaries from convocation need to attend a thank-you letter writing session in the C183 at 10:30. This is during the exam schedule. Lunch will be provided! If you can’t make this time, you MUST see Mrs. Jones. If you want to rewrite a provincial exam in June but are not currently taking the course, please register with Ms. Schramm in Student Services before June 1st. June 25 – Banquet and Dance at Shelby’s Pond starting at 5:30 pm. Cost is $150 per ticket. Tickets are on sale in the office, after your fees are paid! Once you have your ticket, you can reserve a spot at a table. Please see Mrs. Elliott (A118) to do this. If you want to bring a non-GWG student to the banquet and dance or dry grad, you must fill out an application form. These are also available outside the office. June 25 – Dry Grad (after the Banquet and Dance) at the Landing Leisure Center. Cost is $35. We still need parent volunteers. Please e-mail Mr. Reid or email Mrs. Meldrum at rmeldrum@shaw.ca if you are interested. Please remember to pay your student fees!!! You will not be able to purchase tickets or attend grad activities without paying your fees!! Planning on going to UFV, UBC, UVic or maybe others? If you have less than an ‘A’ in English 12, you MAY have to write the LPI (Language Proficiency Index) or CPT (Composition Placement Test) before you can register for some programs or courses. Refer to the program section and course descriptions in each university’s calendar to determine if you need the LPI or CPT score at the time of application or prior to course registration. You must register in advance. Come to Student Services if you have questions. $$$ MONEY WALL $$$ Please continue to check the money wall in Student Services for scholarships or bursaries that you may want to apply for. New applications are arriving weekly! Don’t miss out on your opportunity to be rewarded monetarily for your hard work or volunteer time. See Mrs. Jones today! BURSARIES If you have won a scholarship or bursary that is not part of the school district’s program, including entrance scholarships, athletic scholarships or those through our bank or parents’ employment, please let Mrs. Jones know asap. We want to acknowledge your accomplishments at convocation! STUDENT LOANS Are you needing a loan for your post-secondary education? If so, you can apply for a Canada Student Loan starting on June 1st. Please see Mrs. Jones or get a pamphlet from Student Services if you have questions. Or, visit www.canlearn.ca or go to http://www.aved.gov.bc.ca/studentaidbc/ila/welcome.htm Questions about provincial exams, provincial scholarships, re-writes, re-reads, official transcripts, etc…..please go to https://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/handbook/1415/handbook_of_procedures.pdf If you are unable to attend any of the graduation activities due to financial reasons, please see Mr. Reid or Ms. Schramm asap. We still have some prom dresses available for rent for free through the Graham Glitz program. Come see us today!! And, one last note: Convocation is a school-leaving ceremony only!!! You have not graduated as of June 12th! You still need to attend ALL classes until the 12th and continue to strive to do your best. Graduation is not complete until school marks are in and final and provincial exams are complete. Once this is done, the Ministry of Education will send you your diploma in the mail in July, providing you have met all graduation requirements! For questions about Convocation, see Ms Schramm.
