The Lifelong Learning Centre (LLC) provides part-time courses for adult students at the University campus in Leeds and in the local community. Information about all our courses is available in a variety of alternative formats including audio, Braille, and large print. Please contact the LLC if you would like to receive a copy. We work with the University’s Equality Service to develop appropriate support arrangements which we hope will enable you get the most from your study with us. They conform to the University’s Equality and Diversity Policy, a copy of which is available on request or at www.equality.leeds.ac.uk. What to do if you have a disability which may affect your study There are a variety of situations in which you may need additional support during your studies at university. These include: mental health difficulties (e.g. depression, anxiety disorder, bi-polar disorder, eating disorders); long term medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, cancer, IBS); dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties; mobility or physical impairment; blindness or other sight conditions; deafness or other hearing conditions; Asperger Syndrome. The University can support you, provided we are made aware of your particular needs. When you apply: On your application form you will be given the opportunity to declare any disabilities. Please do this, as this will then be noted on your student record and people involved with you while you are at University will have access to that information. When you complete the application form, you consent to any information you give us being shared within the University in this way. However, please note that access to student records at the University is strictly controlled and information on your student record will be treated in accordance with the terms of the Data Protection Act. When you are accepted on your course: It is important to understand that declaring a disability on your application form does not automatically put in place any support appropriate to your needs. You need to be proactive in making arrangements to ensure that this happens. What you need to do will vary according to whether the support you need will incur additional financial costs the course you are taking. Support without additional financial costs If your disability requires the University to make adjustments to its services which will not incur financial costs, please get in touch with us at an early stage so that we can put this in place (for example, if you need large-print handouts or need to be taught in a room which is accessible to people with mobility difficulties). As long as we are aware of your needs, in reasonable time, we will make every effort to make suitable arrangements. As a first step, contact M.J. Morgan at the LLC to discuss your needs. Support incurring additional financial costs Some disabilities will require the use of specialist services or equipment to enable you to study with us (for example, if you need a personal assistant or recording equipment for note-taking). These will incur additional costs. How these costs will be met will depend on the course you’re taking: 1 Students on Degree/DipHE/CertHE or Foundation Degree courses If you are registering on an undergraduate course leading to a higher education award such as a Degree, Diploma in Higher Education (DipHE), Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE), or Foundation Degree you may be eligible for financial support via Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA). This will pay for specialist support during your course. You will need to provide evidence of your disability. You should apply for this as soon as you are accepted on to your course, using the application form DSA1 available at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance If you do not have internet access, we can send you a paper copy. Please contact LLC Reception at Leeds on 0113 343 3212 to arrange this. You will then be required to get an Assessment of Need (AoN) which will identify and cost up your support needs. The Assessment of Need can be done at the University of Leeds Equality Service or any other designated Assessment Centre. Copies of the completed AoN are sent to you and to the LLC. The University’s Disability Team can then help you to put the necessary support in place in order for you to study. The LLC will use its copy of the AoN to make adjustments to its services and practices to enable you to study. All of this takes time and you are urged to start putting this in place as soon as you know you will be joining the University! If you would like to talk to us ahead of that, please do, we are happy to discuss your needs at an early stage. Students on PHE, Arabic & Islamic Studies, Self-Directed Study and Open Study courses You are not eligible for Disabled Students’ Allowances if you are joining one of these courses. If you need support that will incur financial costs, please contact M.J. Morgan at the LLC as soon as possible to discuss this. When you start your course: By the time you attend your first class meeting, the University should be aware of your needs so that appropriate support can be put into place. You may find it helpful to talk privately with your tutor(s), either before or after class(es) about any issues arising from your disability which might affect your studies. Alternatively, you can contact M.J. Morgan at the LLC who can speak to your tutor(s) on your behalf. When you are on your course: If your circumstances change while you are on your course and you need help due to disability, please get in touch with either M.J. Morgan at the LLC or the University Disability Team to discuss this. We will do our best to help. The Disability Team operates a drop-in help facility 12.30pm – 1.30pm each weekday at the Equality Service office so that students can seek advice at short notice. Alternatively, you can make an appointment with them to discuss your situation. We recognise that this facility is not available to students studying off campus, but you can telephone staff on the Disability Team to discuss issues with them. You may have to book a telephone appointment with the appropriate member of staff during your first call. You can also contact them via email. 2 Parking for disabled students on the Leeds campus Disabled students need a permit in order to park. You can get a permit by completing a form available from the Equality Service office. This should be returned to the Equality Service office with a photocopy of your blue badge. A permit will then be issued by the Security Office. A map showing the location of disabled parking spaces is available from the LLC or on the web at www.equality.leeds.ac.uk/dis-serv/visitors.
