 pronounce and recognize basic classroom objects.
 gain incidental exposure to other Cree phrases.

Sample Lesson: Circle Switch
Objectives:
The students will be able to:
 learn new vocabulary.
 review terms introduced through recognition game.
Materials:
Flashcards
Pre-made cards with pictures of classroom objects (3 cards for each object)
**depending on the number of students in the class, the teacher may need to duplicate the
cards more than three times.
Procedure:
1. Introduce target vocabulary using flashcards. Show a picture of a classroom
object, pronounce the word and have students repeat after you. Do this several
times.
2. Have the students stand in a circle. Give each student a card.
3. Students stand showing their card to the rest of the group.
4. The teacher calls out the name of an object in Cree. The students who have
that card switch places. For example: When the teacher calls out the word for
scissors, the three or more students holding a picture of scissors will switch
places.
5. After a couple of rounds, the teacher will select a student to be the caller and
the game continues. Alternate between different students.

The following activities are not in any particular order. The teachers can choose which
activities they want to use.
Activity One: Concentration/Memory
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
 pronounce the classroom object words in Cree.
 review classroom object terms.
Procedure:

Review vocabulary using flashcards before proceeding with game.
Make decks of cards, enough for the students to play in pairs or groups.
Students turn the cards face down on the floor.
The first player picks up a card and says the word in Cree. The same player picks
up another card and also says the name of the card in Cree. For example, “pencil”
card, student says pencil in Cree.
If a player finds a matching pair, he/she keeps those two cards. If the two cards
the player picks up do not match, he/she returns them to their original spot.
Play continues with the next player.
Game ends when all cards have been matched.
The person with the most cards matched is the winner.
Activity Two: Chant
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
 review classroom object terms in Cree.
Procedure:
1. Review learned vocabulary using flashcards.
2. Post the words of the chant where all students can follow along.
3. Read the words of the chant, emphasizing correct pronunciation of the
vocabulary. Have students repeat each line after you.
4. Read the chant with the students. Perform the actions as you read the chant.

Activity Three: Go Fish
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
 match classroom object terms through game.
 pronounce classroom object words.
Procedure:
1. Review learned vocabulary by showing the students flashcards and saying the
name of the object. Have students repeat after you.
2. Give each group a deck of classroom object cards.
3. Students playing the game will play the same way as if they were playing Go
Fish. They ask the other students if they have a card they need, for example, “Do
you have a pencil?” in Cree. The student either says yes or no and if he/she has
the card he/she gives it to the asking student. The questions and answers should
be in Cree.
4. At the end of the game, the students count their cards. The student with the most
cards wins.
Activity Four: Flashcard Memory Game
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
 review the names of classroom objects in Cree.
 remember the name(s) of classroom objects.
Procedure:
1. Review target vocabulary using flashcards.
2. Choose four students to hold up flashcards at the front of the class. They cannot
show the cards to the rest of the class until you prompt them to.
3. Explain to the audience that the four students standing at the front of the room
will quickly show them the four pictures then hide them. They must try to
remember where each card is.
4. Prompt the four students to quickly show the class the pictures then flip them
back over again.
5. Call out the name of a classroom object in Cree. The students must line up in
front of the student that they think is holding that card.
6. Once you have gone through all four cards, mix the cards up and get four different
students to hold the cards and play the game again.

Activity Five: ninitawēyihtēn (inanimate) I need
ninitawēyimāw (animate)
Objectives:
Students will be able to:
 hear and comprehend terms for classroom objects.
 pronounce classroom object words.
 gain incidental exposure to other vocabulary.
Procedure:
1. Review names of classroom objects. Have students repeat the words.
2. Introduce the phrases for need (ninitawēyihtēn and ninitawēyimāw). Say the
phrases and explain the meaning to the students. Have students repeat the phrases.
3. Give each student a need card. Explain that they will walk around the room
saying, “______________ninitawēyihtēn or ninitawēyimāw”. The other students
will try to figure out what the student needs. (eg: ninitawēyihtēn masinahikan or
ninitawēyimāw masinahikanāhcikos.)
4. When everyone has figured out what the others need, regroup in a circle.
5. Review the class needs by asking, “What does John need?” etc.
6. Place objects from the target vocabulary in the middle of the circle.
7. Divide the class into two teams, one person from each team will stand in front of
the objects.
8. The teacher will say what he/she needs, the student(s) point to the correct object.
9. The first student to correctly point out the object gets a point for his/her team.
10. Continue until all the students have had a turn at choosing the object.
