HHS VARSITY ICE HOCKEY Guiding Principles & Team Rules As coach I believe in building: Character Self-discipline Self-esteem Teamwork Good sportsmanship Team cohesiveness No player will be above the team at any time! Winning is not an accident! Winning is the result of hard work! Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance Every time you hit the ice to play or practice, you must go with everything you’ve got! ***** Hockey is a game of controlled aggression. The players who can control their emotions and channel their aggression will always persevere! ***** If you are doing this for anyone other than yourself, you are making a big mistake! ****** Are you really willing to give everything it takes individually for this team to succeed? ***** “Man’s finest hour, his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle, victorious.” Vince Lombardi ***** You play like you prepare. You win through preparation. The objective is to win! HHS Ice Hockey Guiding Principles 1. Objectives for the Season A. B. C. D. E. F. G. H. I. 2. 1. Develop Teamwork 2. Tradition 3. Pride 4. Hard work ethic 5. Sportsmanship Win Preseason Tournament Win Holiday Tournament Win Freedom Tournament Win GNASH Division Win GNASH Season (best overall record) Win GNASH Year End Tournament Win State Championship! Recommend 4 players for the Chicago Showcase Game Day and Practice Guidelines Game Day: All players will be required to wear a dress shirt with tie, dress pants, and dress shoes for all HHS and GNASH games and tournaments. This means you must look in a neat and professional manner. Failure to follow this rule will result in sitting out a period of a game per incident. Jerseys: Are to be kept looking neat, on hangers, not bunched up in hockey bags. The only time a jersey may be worn is for games or pictures. Failure to follow this rule will result in sitting out a period of a game per incident. Conflicting Schedules/Outside Activities: Players must understand the importance of having all players on the ice for practice. This is vital to the team’s cohesiveness and mental preparation for upcoming games. Players’ who are involved in other activities such as jobs, other hockey teams, etc., must manage their schedule to avoid a conflict with games or practices as much as possible. If the coaches can mange their schedules to meet the team’s needs, we expect the player to do the same. Practices: Any player missing practice must call Coach Tim Rathert @ (615) 478-1770; all calls are to be made prior to practice. Failure to call will result in being benched. Calls must be made by the players. Excuses after the fact will not be accepted. Coaches will decide the validity of the player’s excuse. An invalid excuse will result in being benched one period for the next game. (Example: Miss one practice in one week-miss one period of game that week, miss two practices in one week-miss, two periods of game that week, etc.) Coaching staff has the option of a more severe penalty including season suspension. 2 HHS Ice Hockey Guiding Principles What’s Expected 3. 4. 1. HHS players will be coached in the fundamentals of the game of hockey. 2. HHS players are strong, quick skaters; they will learn how to play defensively and how to put the puck in the net offensively. 3. HHS players will be well disciplined and know the difference between self-defense, retaliation and retribution. 4. HHS players will learn the coaches’ system; they will think of their team 1st, their teammates 2nd, and of themselves last! 5. HHS players will know the importance of doing their best in school. 6. HHS players will love to compete against the best and will succeed through individual hard work and collective teamwork! Player Code Players are to respect coaches, parents, ice officials, and other authority figures at all times. Players are student’s first, hockey players second. Players are to respect each other on and off the ice at all times. If I am injured and cannot give 100%, it is a disservice to my team mates if I do not inform Coach. Players are to behave as gentlemen. Remember you are representing Hendersonville High School and the HHS Hockey Team. Dress code is in effect by the first game of the season. Players are to go over their equipment the day before practice and game. DO NOT come to practice fixing sticks or equipment. Players are to keep the locker room clean at all times. Players are to be ready 15 minutes before games and practices. THIS IS THE COACHES’ TIME. Players are to stretch prior to taking the ice. Team selection, line and special team assignments as well as ice time decisions will be made by the coaching staff based upon performance on and off the ice. I have received and read the guidelines set forth for the Hendersonville High School Ice Hockey Team. I understand and accept these guidelines and am dedicated to put forth my best efforts towards the success of HHS Ice Hockey. Ice Hockey is an expensive and inconvenient sport in Hendersonville, TN. Before you make the commitment of time and money, be sure you are dedicated and prepared to make the sacrifices necessary to achieve the “opportunity to succeed” as an HHS Ice Hockey Team Member.
