The fourth-year student of the English Department of State University of Malang were assigned to write persuasive essays in two languages, Indonesia and English. The rhetorical strategies used in the Indonesian persuasive essays of the EFL students were compared with those used in the English persuasive essays of the same students, and then with those used in the Indonesian persuasive essay of the third-year students of the Department of Indonesian Language and literature (ILL students) of the same university. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the rhetorical strategies used in the Indonesia and English persuasive essays of the EFL students. Whereas, there was a statistically significant difference between the rhetorical strategies used in the Indonesian persuasive essays of the EFL students and those used in the Indonesian persuasive essay of the ILL students. The EFL students' English learning development was likely to affect their rhetoric in writing Indonesian essay.
