CDR Meeting 2-28-06 Tuesday 3 – 4 pm Attendance: Mike Colomaio; Dave Law, Melanie Ryan, Barbara Greil, Milt Brown, Rebecca Wardell Guests: Bob Albrecht, Mel Chambliss, Mike Cobb 1. Bob Albrecht, Interim VPAA, had several concerns: Engineering Seminar courses: why was the committee considering these as they had already passed CDR and Faculty Senate several years ago? Answer: Mike was not sure why the courses were submitted to CDR. He checked with Carol John (VPAA’s office) who had no record of these courses. It was decided to have CDR start the process over. Bob remembered these courses when they came through the first time (he was on CDR) and he agreed to approve of the courses now, so they would not have to be considered again by the committee. CISY 8603. This course was approved by CDR and approved by Faculty Senate on 2-14-06. Bob’s concerns were the following: i. Was there evidence in the student objectives that this was an upper level course? CDR members referred to the Criteria for Upper Level Courses (on CDR web page) used by the committee to evaluate this course. After some discussion, Bob agreed that the course met this standard. ii. Use of term “Senior Status”. One of the criteria for upper level course designation is that there be a pre-requisite. Bob felt the use of terms such as “senior status” might be misleading for future baccalaureate programs. Dave Law agreed to include the specific IT course numbers that would satisfy the pre-requisite requirement. Concern about processing new program requests past CDR deadline to accept new courses. Mike assured Bob that the committee would do everything possible to expedite program approvals up to the end of the spring semester. Bob reiterated his offer to pay for dinner when CDR has a marathon meeting! He thanked the committee for its hard work. 2. VETS 1214 (Anatomy and Physiology of Large Animals) Mel Chambliss answered questions about this course. Since there is no pre-requisite, remove the line from the form In course description, change to: “This course is an organ systems approach…” Also, capitalize Power Point in course description and in student learning objectives Student objectives: i. Change # 3 to: “Describe, using medical and laymen terminology, the location of anatomic land marks and sites used by the veterinarian in his/her performance of routine medical procedures” ii. Change #4 to: “Discuss, compare and apply knowledge and understanding..” Texts and Bibliography: Correct format and add authors (Barb has supplied this information) Division of Subject Matter: Add statement at bottom of lab hours about extra preparation; make sure capitalization is consistent Discussion about number of credit hours: Given the number of actual meeting hours this course should be a 5 credit course. Some members felt that it would unfair to both the instructor and the student if the course remained four credits, and also felt that Faculty Senate would have a problem with the course as four credits. Mel acknowledged that the course should probably be five credits, but was worried that it and a companion course would drive up the total number of hours in the program. In order to make the course four credits, either a lecture hour or a lab hour would need to be dropped. Mel will discuss the issue with Vicki Bolton and get back to CDR. CDR approved the course with the above corrections, and will await word about the number of credits. 3. VETS 3204 (Farm Animal Management) Header: Indicate “none” after pre-requisites Course description: i. Change first sentence to: “This course is designed to provide the student with insight into the behavior, care and management of farm animals “ ii. Change third sentence to: “Emphasis will be placed on the practical aspects..” Also, delete “ will be practiced by students” at end of this sentence Student Objectives: i. Change #1 to: “Describe the history and major breeds of the Bovine, Equine, Ovine, Caprine, Porcine species” ii. Change #5 to: “Compare and perform best management practices (BMP) for the major species of livestock including housing…” Division of subject matter: make capitalization consistent; delete explanations under “Evaluations” Texts and Bibliography: clean up format and add full author’s names (BG supplied this information) Course approved with these changes 4. PSYCH 1083 (Introduction to Sports Psychology) Mike Cobb answered questions about this course Approved as a Gen Ed course Header: delete line about lab hours as this course has no lab Course description: Change part of first sentence to: “…sports psychology, a scientific discipline that studies the psychological/mental and behavioral factors that influence and are influenced by the participation in and performance of sports and physical activity.” Also change “ spectators’ “ to “spectator” in the last sentence. Student objective #7: delete “and its use” Texts and bibliography: use latest edition instead of “newest” Division of subject matter: delete columns for lab and for evaluation; line up total number of hours at bottom of first column; remove period after “Professional Issues in Sport Psychology” Approved with these changes 5. Next meeting will be at 8 am on Thursday, March 2, 2006. Recorded by B. Greil
