The Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series A (Statistics in Society) demonstrates how statistical thinking, design and analyses play a vital role in all walks of life, emphasising quantitative approaches to real problems for non-specialists and specialists alike. It often considers topical or contentious statistical issues, with papers reviewing current statistical concerns, and others contributing to our understanding of important substantive questions. Historical, professional and biographical contributions are also published, as are discussions of methods of data collection and of ethical issues. Series B (Statistical Methodology) is at the cutting edge of methodological development, with a strong emphasis on relevance to statistical practice and disseminating innovative work which is likely to have a substantial impact on the way that data are collected and analysed. Within this remit, the journal embraces relevant work in applied probability, computational methods and the foundations of statistics. Included are papers on study design, statistical models, methods of analysis and underlying theory—almost invariably motivated by real examples. Series C (Applied Statistics) bridges the gap between Series A and B in technical complexity. It deals with novel solutions to real life statistical problems and is motivated by practical examples and statistical data of all kinds, rather than methodological developments. The subject-matter covers the whole range of interdisciplinary fields, e.g. applications in agriculture, genetics, industry, medicine and the physical sciences. A deep understanding of statistical methodology is not necessary to appreciate the content as the journal’s emphasis is on statistical analyses in practice.
