Notes to Applicants
Before completing the application form, please read these notes.
1.
Purpose of the Fellowships
The purpose of these Fellowships to enable nurses and allied health professionals to gain
experience in research methods through active participation in a research project related
to ageing/older people. Successful applicants will be expected to undertake an
appropriate higher degree during the course of the Fellowship (eg. MSc, MPhil, PhD).
2.
Eligibility
Applicants must be registered health professionals working within the UK as nurses,
occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists or similar.
3.
Period of support
Fellowships will be held for a period of up to three years, with the start date being within
6 months of the date of the award
4.
Financial support
The award will cover salary, on costs and some running expenses. Full economic costs
will not be paid to the host institution. We wil fund directly incurred costs up to £40,000
p.a.
5.
Subject of research
5.1
Research proposals should address conditions and/or interventions which predominantly
affect older people (i.e. more than 75% of the subjects are over 70 years of age) or where
the issue to be studied is specific to the old and/or the very old (i.e. those over 70 or 85
years of age).
5.2
Proposals must obviously result from discussion between the applicant and the supervisor,
but the proposal ultimately submitted must be personally composed by the applicant, and
the application form must be countersigned by the supervisor.
6.
Conditions for Application
6.1
Applicants must comply with the British Geriatrics Society Terms and Conditions for
grants funded by the Dunhill Medical Trust as detailed in the accompanying document.

6.2
Submission of an application will be taken to imply acceptance of these Terms and
Conditions.
6.3
Applicants will be required to provide evidence that the head of the relevant department is
willing to host the Fellowship and provide the necessary facilities.
Application Process
7.
Documentation required
7.1
An initial application form should be completed by all applicants (Application Form A)
(see Para 8 below)
7.2
Shortlisted candidates will be required to provide a full scientific proposal (Form B) and
to arrange for the following forms to be completed:



Application Form C: to be completed by the applicant’s head of department
Application Form D: to be completed by the applicant’s proposed supervisor and
head of department
Application Form E: to be completed by the appropriate administrative/finance
officer of the host organisation.
8.
Completion of initial application (Application Form A)
8.1
Application forms are available to download from the BGS website at
http://www.bgs.org.uk/Grants/dunhill.htm
8.2
Applicants should submit only complete forms in clear typescript.
8.3
All questions must be answered or marked “not applicable”.
8.4
Application forms must conform to the presented layout and provide the necessary
information within the space(s) provided on the form; additional sheets (e.g. lists of
publications) will not be included when the application is assessed.
8.5
The forms request an electronic signature. If an electronic signature is not possible, please
e-mail the unsigned form(s) to Dunhill@bgs.org.uk and send a signed copy by post to
Mrs S Allport, British Geriatrics Society, Marjory Warren House, 31 St John’s Square,
London, EC1M 4DN.
8.6
Applicants should return the application form by the closing date (1 December 2007) to
Dunhill@bgs.org.uk. Any queries should be directed to this address or by telephone to

8.7
Application forms received after the closing date will not be accepted.

Receipt of application forms will be acknowledged.
9.
Timetable for application process
The following timetable provides indicative dates for the application process and is for
guidance only (NB. with the exception of the deadline for receipt of initial applications,
which is fixed):





1 December - Deadline for initial applications
31 January - Shortlist confirmed
31 March - Deadline for full proposals (form B) and completed forms C, D and E
20 June - Confirm candidates for interviews
27 June – Interviews to be held
10.
Notification of outcome
10.1
All applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their initial applications.
Shortlisted applicants will be notified of the confirmed deadline for full proposals and the
date for interviews.
10.2
Successful applicants who are awarded a Fellowship will be notified within 2 weeks of
interview.
10.3
Successful applicants will be reminded of the terms and conditions of acceptance and
asked to confirm the intended start date for the Fellowship.
