Disorders of Immunity, Module IIC, 4th year, Academic year 2011/12 Assoc Prof. P. Kucera - Head of the Course The course description: The course is about pathophysiology mechanisms of diseases either originally from the error of immunity either diseases when errors of immunity can contribute. Principles of immunopathology, typical basic symptoms, typical laboratory findings and basic, general therapeutic approaches are discussed. Requirements: The knowledge from the Module IB (Basic of Immunology of Cell) and Module IIA (Immunopathology) is required. There is no room for extensive reviewing of these basics. Structure: The course duration is 1 week; it consists from Seminars, Case studies discussions, Practicum demonstration of some clinical diagnostic procedures. Active participation of all students is essential Topics: Introduction, immune system and human diseases. Immunology laboratory diagnostics, indication and interpretation of laboratory tests Immunodeficiency primary and secondary Autoimmune diseases organ nonspecific – rheumatic diseases, immunocomplex diseases, vasculitis. Autoimmune diseases organ specific – endocrine, renal, GI, neuromuscular and reproductive diseases Allergy diseases and anaphylaxis Immunology of transplantation. Seminar paper: Short review from the literature of about 4-5 pages, appropriate structure, formal aspects and references (please start with the textbook, than Medline search and fulltexts from the PC at school are available (SVI). The paper can be written in pairs. Topics are selected from the recommended areas. In special cases the student can discuss different topic with teachers of the course on the course beginning. The paper has to be about immunology aspect of phenomenon, disease, diagnostics test or therapy. The seminar paper due is the last day of the Course. Recommended areas for paper: Immunodeficiency primary (ID), humoral, combined, complement, phagocytic. Secondary ID. AIDS. Therapy of ID. Autoimmune (AI) diseases – organ nonspecific –rheumatoid diseases. Organ specific AI diseases – various types. Immune mediated infertility. Systemic vasculitis. Lymphoproliferation, immune cytopenias, immunohematology diagnostics. Tumor immunotherapy. Immune aspects of transplantation. Bronchial asthma, pollen allergy, food allergy, drug allergy. Specific allergen immunotherapy, allergy to animals. Skin allergy diseases. Anaphylaxis, latex allergy, professional asthma. Immunosuppressive therapy, therapeutic use of monoclonal antibodies. Credit: 1. The student will briefly present key features of the paper to the teacher to demonstrate the ability to discuss the topic of the paper. 2. One - two questions from topics of the course Terms and localization of credit examination will be posted on the Board of Dept Immunology (near Room 440 – secretary) approx. few days after the course end.
