Spring Term 2014
Dear Parents,
Welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas break!
Here is some information you may find useful about what you and your
child can look forward to this term.
Subjects and Learning
Spring 1 topic: Chocolate
Our work in the first half term will be on the topic of Chocolate.
As part of this topic we will be learning about:
• Where chocolate came from and learning about the Aztecs.
• We will research chocolate bars and wrapping on the market and
design and create our own chocolate bars. We will also create a
marketing campaign including a radio advert and posters.
• We will also explore the issues around fair trade in relation to
chocolate.
• In science we will learn about changing state, how solids can turn
into liquids and gasses.
• In Literacy the children will be reading the story of The Snow
Queen and learning how to use language to persuade.
Spring 2 topic – The Victorians
In the second half of the autumn term we learn about the Victorians. We
are expecting a visit from Professor McGinty, a “time traveller and
detective extraordinaire who has travelled through time and space to bring
back artefacts and stories of his historical adventures.” More details to follow.
Homework
Please ensure that homework diaries are signed and up to date as they
will be checked each day. Children should be spending some time each
evening reading, practising times tables or learning spellings for their
weekly test.
PE
Children will need to bring their PE kit – royal blue or black shorts, a
loose fitting red t-shirt and trainers or pumps – every Tuesday and
Wednesday. This half term we will be focussing on gymnastics and
children will learn how to get out and use the big apparatus. Obviously
this will be taught in the school hall, but if the hall is being used and the
weather allows we will hold PE lessons outside. If your child has a pair
of black or grey jogging bottoms it would be a good idea to include
them in the PE kit bag for when the weather is really cold! If your
child cannot do PE, a note must be sent in on that day.
UNIFORM
This class is very good at wearing the correct school uniform! Just a
reminder to help you keep it up, the uniform includes:
 Royal Blue cardigan or jumper
 Grey skirt or trousers
 Red polo shirt
 Black shoes (no trainers)
 No jewellery is allowed except for single stud earrings (no hoops)
and a watch.
