Mythology Unit Culminating Assignment
For this assignment you will be expected to complete three tasks
that will require you to apply the skills we have been developing
throughout the mythology unit: identifying archetypes, paragraph
writing, and newspaper article writing.
Task 1 –Mythological Archetypes
You must select and read one of the following myths found in Olivia Coolidge’s Greek Myths.
1. “Pyramus and Thisbe” (p. 124)
2. “Heracles” (p. 213)
3. “The Golden Fleece” (p. 166)
4. “Midas” (p. 93)
5. “The Fortunate King” (p. 114)
Based on the myth you have chosen you must EITHER identify and provide proof of the
presence of the hero cycle OR identify and provide proof of a combination of 7 archetypal
characters, symbols, themes and/or situations. Your application of these archetypes must be
presented in a visually appealing manner such as in the form of a scrapbook, poster, or
PowerPoint.
Task 2 – Modern Archetypes
Based on the myth you have chosen to read you must
write one paragraph which provides specific information that
clearly explains how your myth is connected to a modern day
superhero, movie, television show, video game or novel. You may
choose to focus on a common archetypal theme, character,
situation, symbol, or the hero cycle.
Task 3 – News Report
Write a news report based on the myth you selected,
highlighting the main events. You must follow correct news
report format and include all conventions (headline, subheading,
byline, picture, caption, 5 paragraphs in two columns, transitions,
etc.)
