TITLE OF CONVENTION Second edition of the Convention on Perseverance and Academic Achievement for First Peoples Université du Québec à Chicoutimi October 14-16, 2015 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH Le Centre des Premières Nations Nikanite de l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi Le ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport du Québec (MELS) Rio Tinto Alcan CONTEXT Building on the success of its first Convention on Perseverance and Academic Achievement for First Peoples, the Centre Nikanite of UQAC, supported by the MELS and Rio Tinto Alcan, decided to relive the experience! The first edition helped to draw up an overview of development practices in the Aboriginal school world in Quebec and in the periphery that may contribute to the perseverance and academic success among First Peoples. The view that emerged was nothing less than an eloquent testimony of equally relevant support measures, research, and support programs. Much of what was presented at the Convention is echoed in the first issue of the Journal of Perseverance and Academic Achievement for First Peoples. In response to the needs expressed by participants who attended the first edition of the Conference, the Scientific Committee wishes to further define the scope to explore and deepen the problems experienced in the field, by exploring initiatives, research, and practices developed concretely in the schools. This is what evokes the theme of the second edition of the Convention: What is happening in schools: teaching practices, support practices, collaborative practices. Willing to contribute to better publicize the progress, but also issues around student success and perseverance, the partners of the Convention will unite once again to provide to various First Peoples education actors an opportunity for sharing information and ideas, particularly the domain of practices and educational and social interventions. CALL FOR PAPERS Teachers, professionals, managers, practitioners, university students, and researchers wishing to participate in exclusive exchanges in Quebec pertaining to practices of those who welcome and guide the students from the First Peoples, you are invited to submit proposals for workshops, practice narratives, presentations of educational materials or of scientific communications for the second edition of this Convention. THEME The Scientific Committee will be particularly receptive to presentations regarding teaching practices, support practices, and collaborative practices documented from experiences in schools or research. At this Convention, priority will be given to the following questions: 1) For all school subjects, what are the teaching practices that may contribute to the perseverance and academic success for First Peoples? 2) What are the support practices implemented in this perspective? 3) What collaborative practices are offered to school communities to promote student retention and academic success? TYPES OF PRESENTATIONS Any type of presentation is accepted, whether it is in the form of: - Practice narratives Workshop proposals Presentation of teaching practices on different teaching and learning approaches Presentation of school materials Scientific communications Note that round-tables and conferences on crucial issues of perseverance and academic achievement among First Peoples will complete the presentations. SELECTION PROCESS AND CRITERIA The process and the selection criteria are primarily open and inclusive. We welcome participants from all walks of professions: teachers of primary and secondary schools, professionals, managers, stakeholders, university students, professors, and researchers... The basic criterion is that the proposal addresses an element that directly or indirectly promotes school perseverance and success among First Peoples, and that it is as close as possible to what is happening in schools. Proposals will be evaluated on the basis of their quality and their relevance to the theme of the Convention PROPOSALS (200 words) Every teacher, professional, manager, social practitioner, university student, professor or researcher wishing to submit a proposal in the context of this Convention may do so in a 200-word text stating the relevant section (workshop or presentation of new teaching approaches or ongoing research and presentation of research results). PUBLICATION The Journal of Perseverance and Academic Achievement for First Peoples is the publication in which the presenters may, if they wish to do so, publish an article on the subject they presented at the Convention. The journal will be used to disseminate teaching and learning approach presentations, scientific articles, and practice narratives for collaborators who wish to leave traces of their presentation.
