Approved at October 2009 Council meeting AUSA MEMBERSHIP POLICY Relevant clauses of proposed Constitution: 5. Membership Classes 5.1 Membership classes of the Association may include the following: (a) Ordinary Members (b) University Members (c) Associate Members (d) Junior Members (e) Visiting Members (f) Honorary Members (g) Life Members (h) Social Members (i) Such other classes as created from time to time under Clause 5.3 5.2 The criteria of all membership classes will be determined from time to time by the Council and recorded in the Association Membership Policy 5.3 The Council will have the power to create new classes of membership from time to time 5.4 Council shall have the power to limit the number of members in any class except Ordinary Membership 5.5 The number of Ordinary Members within each Club shall be a majority The Policy There shall be the following categories of membership: (a) Ordinary Members (or Student Members) All enrolled students of the University of Adelaide. (b) University Members Either 1. Academic, professional and ancillary staff members of the University or the Union, on payment of such annual fee as Council may from time to time determine or 2 2. External students, who are members of the Adelaide University Union, or who elect to become members of the Association only, on payment of such annual fee as Council may from time to time determine or 3. Graduates of the University of Adelaide and other universities on payment of such annual fee as Council may from time to time determine or 4. Managers or employees of businesses on campus owned by the University or Union, who elect to become members of the Association on payment of such annual fee as Council may from time to time determine or 5. Spouses of Ordinary Members and their children under 18 years of age upon annual registration and payment of such annual fee as Council may from time to time determine or 6. Current coaches, who may or may not be player coaches, appointed by Clubs, upon approval by the Board and payment of such annual fee as Council may from time to time determine, with a limit of one such coach for each team and three for each Club or 7. Current members of Sports Unions or Associations of other Tertiary Institutions, upon nomination by a Club and approval by their own Sports Union or Association, may be admitted to University membership for an indefinite period, if their own Sports Union or Association does not provide for their sport, subject to an annual review and upon payment of such annual fee as Council may from time to time determine. (c) Associate Members 1. Any other person, who does not qualify under the terms of Ordinary or University Membership, but who may be granted membership by the Board, in accordance with regulations laid down from time to time by Council and payment of such annual fee as Council may from time to time determine. 2. Associate Members are limited to 25% of the total membership of any Club, with the Board required to review regularly the percentage figure every six months. 3. Associate Membership is subject to annual nomination by a Club and approval of the Board of Management. (d) Junior Members 1. Junior Members are members under 18 years of age as at 1 March of each year, who are not enrolled students of the University of Adelaide. They may be admitted to membership of the Association upon nomination by a Club and approval by the Board and upon payment of such annual fee as Council may from time to time determine. 2. Junior Members may be admitted as a consequence of a requirement of the State Association for its member clubs to foster a junior team or 3 a desire by a Club, with the approval of the Board, to provide training or to otherwise promote and encourage sport at a junior level. 3. Junior Members will not be counted as full members of Clubs for the purpose of assessing eligibility for affiliated status or allocation of grants. (e) Visiting Members Provided that reciprocal rights are extended to members of the Association: 1. Current undergraduate or postgraduate student members of other University Sports Associations or Unions outside of this State may be admitted as Visiting Members for a period of up to 12 months upon application to the Board. 2. Current graduate or staff members of other University Sports Associations or Unions outside of this State may be admitted as Visiting Members for up to one semester upon application to the Board. Membership for longer periods will be upon application and payment of a prescribed fee as determined by Council. (f) Honorary Members Council, by a two-thirds majority of those present and voting, may confer Honorary Membership on individuals appointed to serve on Association or Club Committees. Such membership shall be limited to the period of service on that committee, and to the annual activities of that particular Club or committee. (g) Life Members Council, by a two-thirds majority of those present and voting, may by the award of the Half Blue in appreciation for services to the Association, confer honorary Life Membership on any individual. (h) Social Members Persons, who wish to maintain an involvement in a Club, but not in a playing or administrative capacity, may be admitted to membership of the Association as a Social Member upon payment of such annual fee as Council may from time to time determine. Social Members will not be counted as full members of Clubs for the purpose of assessing eligibility for affiliated status or allocation of grants. Conditions of membership 1. Ordinary Members of the Association shall be entitled to membership and all of the benefits of any of the Clubs affiliated to the Association, subject always to the rules and constitution of the Club that the member wishes to join and upon payment to the Club of such subscription fee prescribed by the Club and approved by the Association. 4 2. Council shall have the power to limit the number of members in any category except Ordinary Membership. 3. No person shall become a member of any Club except by becoming a member of the Association and, upon ceasing to be a member of the Association, such person shall cease to be a member of all affiliated Clubs. 4. No member shall be entitled to any rights or privileges of membership of the Association while their subscription is due and unpaid. 5. If the conduct of any members shall in the opinion of the Council or any 10 members of the Association, who shall certify the same to the Executive Officer in writing, be injurious to the character or interests of the Association or its members, the Executive Officer shall convene a meeting of the Board within 14 days. The Board shall consider the conduct of such members and take whatever action it deems appropriate, including suspension of membership. Any member shall have the right to appeal to a Tribunal as described in clause 21 of the proposed Constitution by providing written notice within seven days (following the decision on the subject of the appeal is communicated in writing to the member) to the Executive Officer or President. Any member suspended or otherwise ceasing to be a member of the Association shall forfeit all rights to and claim upon the Association and its property or funds which they would have by reason of membership.
