Socratic Seminar Questions: 1. Do the Puerto Rican homeowners in Humboldt Park have the right to only sell or rent to Puerto Rican buyers or renters? 2. Do people who move to new cities in the U.S. today still need support from an ethnic neighborhood to survive? 3. Is what is happening to the displaced community of Humboldt Park immoral or is it okay for developers to bring in new residence who can afford the higher rents/prices and cost living in the city? 4. Can a neighborhood survive if it only caters to a specific group? C.R.A.F.T. Assignment – Pick one 1. You have just arrived in Chicago from Ellis Island, after a long trip from Germany. After making your way to Humboldt Park, a place where many Germans lived at the time, write a letter home describing the neighborhood, extended family or friends, living arrangements, job opportunities, educational choices, and the social norms of the day. 2. Write your own blog. After reading the blog about the argument of whether or not it is discrimination to keep Humboldt Park Puerto Rican, respond to one of the bloggers and their comments. 3. Interview a resident of Humboldt Park. Brainstorm a list of relevant questions. 4. Make up a board game about the different groups of people that have lived in Humboldt Park or about migrating to any town in America. 5. Pretend that you are over-seeing the building of parks in Chicago and you want to ask Alexander Von Humboldt if you can name a new park (H.P.) after him. Remember to include reasons for why he would be the perfect person to hold this honor.
