The evolution of management philosophies, social relations in the work place, employee motivation, industrial conflicts, trade unionism and industrial relations , industrialization, globalization and development, the different theoretical approaches in industrial sociology. It also examines labour organization, government regulations and impacts of modern technology on the work place. Karl Marx and alienated labour Week 3: Emile Durkheim’s view of complex organizations and division of labour and Max Weber’s (authority, power and domination) contributions to industrial sociology. Module 2: Productivity problem and management approaches Week 4: Scientific management Week 5: Human relations approach Module 3: Motivation and industrial conflict Week 6: Employee motivation Week 7: Industrial conflict Week 8: Trade union and collective bargaining Week 9: Negotiating skills and strategies 2 Module 4: Globalization and technology impacts in industry. Week 10: Impacts of technology on the work place Module 5: Decent Work Week 11: Decent work agenda: concept and practicability in Nigeria Week 12 and 13: Revision Structure of the Programme/Method of Grading Method of grading: (continuous assessment 40% and examination 60%) Ground Rules & Regulations: students should attend class regularly and maintain order in class. They must also contribute in class and submit term papers as and when due. Contemporary issues/industry relevance Industrial sociology is one of the applied sub-disciplines in sociology, concerned with solving contemporary industrial problems and ensuring maximum order in the workplace using sociological precepts.
