SCIENTIFIC OFFICER DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING FACULTY OF ENGINEERING & THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT We invite applications from enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals for appointment 1 July 2012 or soonest thereafter. The successful candidate will work in the main Analytical Laboratory under the Laboratory Manager. He/she will be expected to perform physical and chemical analysis on a variety of samples using elemental analysis and particle characterisation techniques. The main types of analysis performed by the Analytical Laboratory are AAS, ICP- OES, Sulfur analysis, XRF, BET, Chemisorption and Zeta potential. The intention is to fill one of the positions below, dependant on qualifications and experience. Scientific Officer Requirements: National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent or extensive laboratory experience in one of the above mentioned types of analysis A minimum of 3 years experience in an analytical laboratory Working knowledge on spectrophotometric and/or particle characterisation analysis Good communication and interpersonal skills. Responsibilities: Sample preparations including digestions Method development with consideration of sample matrix compensations Preparation of stock standards and volumetric solutions. Operation and routine maintenance on analytical equipment. Troubleshooting on equipment Ability to perform tasks concurrently Ability to work independently and within a team Training of students and new operators on equipment The annual cost of employment, including benefits, is negotiable between R200 452 and R235 811 Senior Scientific Officer Requirements: National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent or extensive laboratory experience in one of the above mentioned types of analysis A minimum of 5 years experience in an analytical laboratory Working knowledge on spectrophotometric and/or particle characterisation analysis Good communication and interpersonal skills. Thorough understanding and knowledge of GLP Critically evaluate and interpret data Responsibilities: Sample preparations including digestions Method development with consideration of sample matrix compensations Preparation of stock standards and volumetric solutions.
