1. Subscription Databases
The following databases can be accessed from the ‘Databases’ link on the e-Library
homepage.
Biomedical Reference Comprehensive Collection
Biomedical Reference Collection: Comprehensive provides doctors, research scientists,
students, clinical specialists and managers with access to nearly 900 full text journals,
including full text for more than 850 peer-reviewed publications, covering such disciplines as
clinical medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system and the
preclinical sciences. When this citation database is viewed via EBSCOhost there is the ability
to link to full text for articles contained within the Biomedical Reference Collection:
Comprehensive database.

Cochrane Library
The Cochrane Library is a premier resource for information on the effectiveness of healthcare
interventions. It is a collection of information put together by, among others, the Cochrane
Collaboration and the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination. This version is provided
free to the UK general public via the National Electronic Library for Health (NeLH).
Embase
A major biomedical and pharmaceutical database covering the following fields: drug
research, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, toxicology, clinical and experimental human
medicine, health policy and management, public health, occupational health, environmental
health, drug dependence and abuse, psychiatry, forensic medicine, and biomedical
engineering/instrumentation. Widely used biomedical and pharmaceutical databases because
of its currency and in-depth indexing. Coverage: 1980 - current. Access is available to NHS
affiliated staff and students from all sectors.

Medline
MEDLINE is the U.S. National Library of Medicine's (NLM) premier bibliographic database
covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care
system, and the preclinical sciences. Coverage: 1966 - current. Access is available to NHS
affiliated staff and students from all sectors.

ZETOC
ZETOC provides access to the British Library's Electronic Table of Contents of current
journals and conference proceedings.

Amedeo.com: The Medical Literature Guide
A current awareness service promoting free access to bibliographic information.
Combined Health Information Database
Composed of 16 databases in areas of interest like cancer and Alzheimer's disease but also in
hard-to-find specialities like skin disease, complementary medicine, deafness, oral health,
weight control, and more. This database is produced by the US National Institutes of Health
(NIH).
HSTAT
Health Services Technology Assessment Text is a searchable collection of large, full-text
clinical practice guidelines, technology assessments and health information.
National Institute of Health Consensus Statements
The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides evidence-based assessments of medical
practice for the medical community and the public, through conferences that produce
consensus statements and state-of-the-science statements on issues in medicine important to
health care providers, patients, and the general public. The website provides the full text of
NIH consensus statements from 1977 to 2002, where each statement is the product of an
independent panel of experts and is based on the panel's assessment of medical knowledge
available at the time the statement was written.
ScHARR
A ScHARR Introduction to Free Databases of Interest to NHS Staff on the Internet. (Includes
the British Dental Association Library Catalogue).
Timelit
Database of references to articles covering medical education. Data built up over the past 20
years.

The American Dental Association (ADA) is the US professional association of dentists,
which aims to support dental health, ethics, science and professional advancement through
initiatives in advocacy, education, research and the development of standards. The website
provides information on the ADA, resources for dental professionals including library
services and publications, and information on oral health for consumers. Some features are
accessible only to ADA members.
Bristol Biomedical Image Archive

The Bristol Biomedical Image Archive (Bristol BioMed) is an online collection of about 8500
medical, dental and veterinary images for use in teaching and learning. To find images there
are basic, advanced and MeSH thesaurus searches, and browsing by keywords or terms
derived from the image descriptions. Thumbnail images are available, but free registration is
required to view full-size images. The archive is based at the Unversity of Bristol.
British Dental Association

The British Dental Association (BDA) is the professional association and trade union for
dentists in the UK. The BDA develops policies to represent dentists working in every sphere.
The website provides information about the BDA, and information on education and careers.
It also provides advice and resources, including information on issues affecting salaried
dentists and those in general practice; news about the BDA; BDA factfiles with guidance on a
range of issues; and general advice and information for dentists and students. Additional
services are accessible only to members of the BDA.

General Dental Council

The General Dental Council (GDC) is the regulatory body for dentists in the UK, giving
dentists the legal right to practise. It aims to protect patients and promote confidence in dental
professionals by registering qualified professionals, setting standards of dental practice and
conduct, assuring the quality of dental education, ensuring professionals keep up-to-date,
helping patients with complaints about a dental professional and working to strengthen patient
protection. The website provides information about the GDC, registration, complaints,
education, continuing professional development (CPD) and meetings. There is a facility for
searching the register of dentists, and publications including information and reports to
download as PDF files (requiring Adobe Acrobat Reader).
Practitioner Services Division

The Practitioner Services Division (PSD) of the NHSScotland Common Services Agency
(CSA) is responsible for making payments to Family Health Service (FHS) contractors and
maintaining the indices of patients registered with family doctors and dentists, on behalf of
