Safe Work Procedure Title and basic description
Title: Using the Ratex Shaker
Description: To ensure the safe usage of shaker in the laboratory
Associated risk assessment title and location: STGCL.RA.82.1
Describe the activity or process
Main objectives in using the shaker:
1. To use the shaker safely for the intended purpose
2. Not to spill any chemicals or solutions that are being rocked
3. If chemicals or solutions are spilt, clean up immediately ( follow SWP for chemical spills)
Chemical/biological solutions may be hazardous and hence may present immediate danger to the user or subsequent users.
MSDS are located in the laboratory for risk management procedures.
Operating the Shaker Machine
1. Ensure that the machine is sitting flat and has no obstruction to its motion.
2. Place the items to be shaken on the plat form and secure them. Make sure that all the tubes or other
Containers are sealed to prevent any spills.
3. Switch on the shaker.
4. Adjust the speed of the shaker
5. At the end of the operation, switch off the shaker.
6. Remove the items that has been shaken
7. If there are any spillage, it must be cleaned immediately.

chemicals, personal protective clothing and
equipment, etc

Tubes with lids or containers with lids to be shaken.
MSDS for chemicals being PPE ( long sleeve Lab gowns and latex gloves) should be worn at all times when using the centrifuge

List potential hazards and risk controls including
specific precautions required
There is a potential hazard of exposure to chemicals through skin, eyes and possible ingestion.
All staff and students are trained to use equipment safely as well as being trained to use the hazardous chemicals safely
MSDS are available in the laboratory for risk management of chemicals.
Regular laboratory meetings and OHS meeting to reinforce potential hazards.
List emergency shutdown instructions
The Shaker machine has OFF switch which can be turned off in the case of emergency.
It can be turned off at the power point in emergency.
List clean up and waste disposal requirements
Ensure that the Shaker machine is turned off after use.
Report any faults in equipment to the laboratory manager.
