1. Low Rectal Cancer (LOREC) National Development Programme – Mr
Talvinder Gill, Colorectal Surgeon, gave an update on the LOREC
programme which is funded by the National Cancer Action Team and aims
to improve cancer outcomes and quality of life for patients with low rectal
cancers. Initially only 1 Colorectal MDT per Network was invited to be
involved in the programme but this has now been extended to all MDTs.
Mr Gill asked members to raise awareness and encourage support; further
information can be found at: www.lorec.nhs.uk
2. Anal Cancer Process Audit – Dr Jonathan Nicoll, Consultant Clinical
Oncologist, presented on the outcomes of this audit which was undertaken
in North Cumbria. Members noted the following actions:
-
Referral to be made by e-mail direct from local MDT (as oncology
referrals are).
Check for specialist MDT reply before treatment starts.
Annual audit to be undertaken.
3. Audit of Time from Surgery to Starting Adjuvant Chemotherapy for
Colorectal Cancer – Dr Jonathan Nicoll presented on this audit which
was also undertaken in North Cumbria. Members welcomed comparative
data from Newcastle and South Tees in order to discuss the
recommendations further.
4. Audit on Nurse-led Bowel Investigation Clinic in South Tyneside –
Elaine Kilgannon, Cancer Services Manager, and Jane Barnes, CNS,
presented on the outcomes of an audit undertaken in 2010 and
subsequent re-audit of the Nurse-led Bowel Cancer Assessment Clinic in
South Tyneside. The group discussed the findings and welcomed further
analysis around the clinic’s cost effectiveness.
5. Cancer Waiting Times Audit – Linda Wintersgill, NECN Information &
Audit Manager, explained the scope of this audit which was to determine
how long patients wait for each part of the patient pathway from referral to
treatment in NECN and to assess the degree of variation between different
trusts in the Network.
6. NORCCAG: Report on Process and Outcomes Data of the Treatment
of Colorectal Cancer – David Borowski, Consultant Surgeon, and
Dorothy Simms, Audit Co-ordinator, updated on the NORCCAG annual
report.
Further Evaluation:
What was your opinion of the venue?
Which aspect of the day was most useful to you?
Comments:

Need a wider audience

NORCCAG information very disjointed; what benefit is this – how is
the information used?

Keep on changing the venue

Better communication of details of the day in a more timely way may
facilitate a better attendance; it is a very useful meeting and I am
sure many are disappointed to have missed the meeting

Early notification to be able to sort work load
Closing Remarks
MJ closed the meeting by thanking everyone for their participation.
