Chinese Courses | Outcomes & Indicators May 2013 Chinese 101 Outcome 1 – Students will demonstrate an ability to speak Mandarin Chinese at the ACTFL beginning-mid level, make utterances at sentence level in interaction on learned topics, and speak by looking at pinyin writing. Indicators - Informal OPI, skits, and computer-adaptive speaking test. Outcome 2 – Students will comprehend main ideas in basic conversations delivered at a slow speech rate and be able to transcribe what is heard in pinyin writing. Indicators – Informal OPI, skits, and computer-adaptive listening test. Outcome 3 – Students will be able to recognize 150 words and comprehend the main ideas of a text in Chinese characters on familiar topics. Indicators – Computer-adaptive reading test. Outcome 4 – Students will master 100-120 words in writing, demonstrate an ability to write a 120-character passage on familiar topics by typing, and be familiar with 20 plus radicals. Indicators – Computer-adaptive writing test and exams. Chinese 102 Outcome 1 – Students will demonstrate an ability to Speak Mandarin Chinese at the ACTFL beginning-high level and make utterances at short paragraph level in interaction on learned topics. Indicators – Informal OPI, skits, and computer-adaptive speaking test. Outcome 2 – Students will comprehend main ideas in basic conversations delivered at a modified speech rate. Indicators – Informal OPI, skits, and computer-adaptive listening test. Outcome 3 – Students will be able to recognize 250 words and comprehend the main ideas of a text in Chinese characters on familiar topics. Indicators – Computer-adaptive reading test. Outcome 4 – Students will master 150-200 words in writing and demonstrate an ability to write a 200-character passage on familiar topics by typing. Indicators – Computer-adaptive writing test and exams. Chinese 201 Outcome 1 – Students will be able to initiate, sustain, and close conversations on general topics. Indicators – Informal OPI. Outcome 2 – Students will be able to read approximately 300 terms contextualized in narratives, dialogues, essays, etc. and write 90 terms in sentence-level constructions. Indicators – Quizzes. Outcome 2 – Students will be able to read approximately 320 terms contextualized in narratives, dialogues, essays, etc. and write 150 terms in sentence-level constructions. Indicators – Quizzes. Chinese 301 Outcome 1 – Students will be able to converse on broad topics and social issues with sufficient vocabulary in a coherent & organized way at ACTFL intermediate-high level or better. Indicators – Informal OPI and modified HSK speaking. Outcome 2 – Students will comprehend main points in interpersonal, discourse/paragraph level communication, both informal and formal, and reach ACTFL intermediate high level. Indicators – Computer-adaptive listening and modified HSK listening tests. Outcome 3 – Students will be able to read a variety of written genres and other formal & informal forms of writing at the ACTFL intermediate-mid level. Indicators – Computer-adaptive reading and modified HSK reading tests. Outcome 4 – Students will be able to compose a variety of notes, correspondence and short essays (450-500 words) at the ACTFL intermediate-mid level. Indicators – Sample papers from Chinese culture (minor students only). Outcome 5 – Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate and act in linguistically, socially, and culturally appropriate ways in Mandarin Chinese. Indicators – Informal OPI and questionnaire. Chinese 302 Outcome 1 – Students will be able to converse on broad topics and social issues with sufficient shumianyu in a coherent & organized way at the ACTFL advanced-low level or better. Indicators – Informal OPI and modified HSK speaking test. Outcome 2 – Students will comprehend main points in both informal and formal, interpersonal communication and understand main points of news broadcasts on familiar topics. Indicators – Computer-adaptive listening test. Outcome 3 – Students will be able to read a variety of written genres, including journalistic prose and other formal and informal writing styles at the ACTFL intermediate-high level. Indicators – Computer-adaptive reading and modified HSK reading tests. Outcome 5 – Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate and act in linguistically, socially, and culturally appropriate ways in Mandarin Chinese. Indicators – Informal OPI, questionnaire, and exit questionnaire. Chinese 345 Outcome 1 – Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the fundamental values & features of Chinese culture & society and differences & commonalities with their native culture, understand how the role of ideology, tradition, ethnicity, and gender play in Chinese perception of their culture relative to others, and be able to apply this knowledge. Indicators – Essay, research paper, and exams. Chinese 347 Outcome 1 – Students will be able to explain & describe the cultural & historic milieu of various masterpieces of Chinese literature. Indicators – Mid-term and final assessments, reading responses, and written assignments. Outcome 2 – Students will be able to express ideas about literature in speech and writing. Indicators – Mid-term and final assessments, reading responses, class presentations, and written assignments. Outcome 3 – Students will refine their capacities as thoughtful and perceptive readers. Indicators – Mid-term and final assessments, essay, and written assignments. Chinese 377 Outcome 1 – Students will understand best practices for effective instruction. Indicators – Exams and classroom assignments. Outcome 2 – Students will understand that the process of second language acquisition includes the interrelated skills of observing, listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
