The ViceChancellor’s Excellence Award (VCEA) recognises the value of breadth of learning for the
University of Canterbury ’s most capable students, and supports their endeavours to study beyond their chosen degree.
1. Courses taken under the VCEA programme will incur no tuition fee.
2. a. Courses on the degree schedules of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the
Faculty of Creative Arts (BA, MusB, BSW, and BFA) are eligible to be taken under the VCEA programme.
1 b. Courses taken may be of a value of no more than 15 credit points per semester. Courses to a maximum total of 60 credit points may be taken under the VCEA programme. c. A student may take more than one course under the VCEA programme in one year, incurring no tuition fees for the courses, and having the successful completion of each course recorded on his or her academic transcript. However, only one VCEA will be listed under the “Academic
Awards” section of a recipient’s transcript in any one year.
3. At the time of the application for enrolment in a course under the VCEA programme, candidates must be in one of the following categories: a. Current full-time domestic students in PhD programmes at the University of Canterbury. b. Current or intending domestic undergraduate students. Successful applicants in this category, at the time of commencement of study in a course under the VCEA programme, must i. have passed at least 90 points of study; and ii. have achieved an overall GPA of at least 7.0; and iii. be enrolled full time at the University of Canterbury.
4. Applications to take courses under the VCEA programme must be made to the Academic
Administrator of the relevant faculty prior to the closing date for enrolment.
5. a. Entry to a course under the VCEA programme is by approval of the Dean of the Faculty of
Humanities and Social Sciences or the Dean of Creative Arts, as appropriate, who will take into account the breadth that the course would contribute to an applicant’s education. For this reason, under normal circumstances the Dean will not approve enrolment in courses under the VCEA programme from the schedule(s) of the major subject(s) in which the applicant is enrolled. b. Entry to courses under the VCEA programme is subject to the normal pre-requisites or other entry requirements for those courses.
6. Courses taken under the VCEA programme are subject to normal workload restrictions and approval for exceptions must be gained in the usual way.
7.
1 Currently only 100-level and 200-level courses may be taken under the VCEA programme.
a. Courses taken under the VCEA programme will contribute to a certificate of proficiency (COP-
VCEA) and will be graded on the basis of Pass (P), Aegrotat Pass (P Aeg), Fail (F), or
Dishonesty (X). b. A course taken under the VCEA programme and granted a Pass or Aegrotat Pass grade i. will not be credited in any way towards the requirements for any other degree(s), diploma(s) or certificate(s) for which a student had been studying at the time of their taking a VCEA course; ii. may count as a pre-requisite for other courses at UC, or otherwise may be used to meet requirements for further study, as long as this is not affected by the course’s being graded on the basis of pass or fail.
8. Courses completed under the VCEA programme may be credited to later qualifications granted by the University on the following conditions: a. That the student has already graduated or is eligible to graduate with a UC degree; and b. That the course or courses for which the VCEA has been awarded contribute to no more than
50 per cent of the points value/EFTS of any future qualification.
9.
A VCEA will be listed under the “Academic Awards” section of a recipient’s transcript on condition of successful completion of the requirements for a course under the VCEA programme and adherence to the University’s statutes and regulations.
10. A condition of acceptance is that recipients permit publication and announcement of their acceptance of the award.
History of the Award: The award was established in 2013.
