POSTER THEME: “The Declaration of Independence” to the Ordinance of 1787 and
225th Anniversary of the Founding of Marietta and the Northwest Territory.

Revolution present “Fort Harmar 1785 & Marietta and Northwest Territory 1788”
April 5, 2013 – Noon to 1pm - Ohio River Museum, 601 Front Street, Marietta
Guest Speaker: Jeff Spear, President of Sons & Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen
Topic: The Ritts' W.P. Snyder Jr Legacy. Turn your boring brown bag lunch into an
enjoyable repast at the Ohio River Museum. Join us for a FREE and exciting program
presented by Jeff Spear, President of Sons & Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen.
Talk and walk-through of "The Ritts' W.P. Snyder Jr Legacy" exhibit. This exhibit
covers the lives of Captain Charles E. Ritts transportation manager for Crucible Steel
Company of America and his son Charles E. Ritts, Jr unofficial photographer for
Crucible. The exhibit contains many wonderful artifacts pertaining to Crucible boats and
C.E. Ritts Jr's marvelous photographs.
Also discussed will be Captain Cumberland W. Posey from Belpre, Ohio. In the late
19th and early 20th century Captain Posey, a black man, became one of Pittsburgh, PA's
success stories, owning and running several towboats, a bank, and one of the first black
baseball teams. Truly a man of industry and finance. Free Program. Discounted

April 5, 2013 – Marietta Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Chapter
Library, 507 8th St. Marietta, open 10 to 2pm, free and open to researching your patriot
ancestor.
April 6, 2013 – 1pm -Marietta Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution
invites Sons of the American Revolution for 225th Birthday Luncheon at American
Legion Post 64. Speaker: Louise Zimmer. Cost: $13.50 Reservations by April 1 to Janice
McGregor, 740-678-2756. The Marietta Chapter DAR invites SAR and DAR members
to attend. Louise Zimmer is a very interesting speaker. She is a prolific researcher of
Ohio history, radio show personality and one that weaves the stories of our pioneer past
with true perfection. Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard will present Colors.
April 6, 2013 – 9:30am to 5pm – Campus Martius Museum, 601 Second St. Marietta
“Marietta Imagined Exhibit” Tour the Ohio Company House constructed in 1788.
Tour General Rufus Putnam House that was part of the original fortress Campus
Martius. Regular admission fee.
April 6, 2013 – 9:30am -5pm (Seminar begins at 10am) Campus Martius Museum
Author James Williams will premier his new book, “Blazes, Posts and Stones”
beginning at 9:30 AM in the Ohio Company Land Office at Campus Martius. Dressed in
period uniform, Williams will present a seminar from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM. The
seminar titled, “Indian War 1790-1795, the life and death struggle for the Northwest
Territory” will feature new maps, visuals and flags.
Anyone wishing to purchase an autographed copy of James Williams’ book should plan
to attend this event. Dressed in period uniform, reenactors of the Geographer’s
Department of General Washington’s Army will be featured throughout the day.
Also in attendance will be members of the Professional Land Surveyors of Ohio.
Regular admission fee except members are free.

April 6, 2013 – 1pm – Campus Martius Museum, 601 Second Street, Marietta
Chuck Bell as George Washington Learn the myths and little known facts of our first
President, straight from him. President Washington will tell you about his life as a
surveyor, frontier commander, farmer and planter, Revolutionary War General and
President of the United States. The program is free thanks to the Washington County
Public Library. If you wish to tour Campus Martius Museum, regular admission fees
apply.

April 7, 2013 – 10 to 11am – First Congregational Church, 318 Front St. Marietta
“225th Anniversary Church Service” Service will provide history and detail of the early
church and its teaching. The community and guests in Colonial period clothing are
welcome.
“On December 6, 1796, the Christian people in the various settlements banded
themselves together in a Church under a simple but comprehensive confession of faith
and covenant." So runs an account in the handwriting of Rufus Putnam concerning the
first organized church in Marietta and now the oldest continuous worshipping fellowship
west of the Alleghenies began.

April 7, 2013 – 12:30 to 1pm First Congregational Church, bell ringing of the carillon
will be performed with various patriotic tunes. Guests are invited to climb the steps into
the bell tower to watch or assist Nancy Riley, Past Regent of the Daughters of the
Revolution as she operates the wooden levers to engage the chimes.
April 7, 2013 – 1 to 1:40pm, 225th Landing of the First Forty Eight Pioneers at Start
Westward Monument, Muskingum Park. Rufus Putnam (Historian Bill Reynolds),
dignitaries and historians will address the assembled. Assisted by period dressed
members of the Brigade of the American Revolution; Color Guard from the Sons of the
American Revolution and guest reenactors. (In case of rain, program to be held at First
Congregational Church, across the street at 318 Front Street)
April 7, 2013 – 1:40 to 2pm – Processional from Start Westward Monument to
Campus Martius Wharf and the Ohio River Museum. Rufus Putnam, BAR, SAR,
DAR, and Living History reenactors will lead the processional (parade) with townsfolk
and guests joining in.
April 7, 2013 – Noon to 5pm – Ohio River Museum, 601 Front Street, site of the
Campus Martius Wharf, 2 to 5pm – Sons of the American Revolution members in
period clothing at the 1788 Flatboat Replica for program. Regular admission fee for
tours.

Andrew Cayton will present “Marietta in Memory, History & Imagination”. His talk
will focus on the personal and professional regarding the legacy of Marietta's founders.
Cayton is a Distinguished Professor of History at Miami University, (Ohio) teaches
courses in the history of North America in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
He has written extensively about the struggle for control of the region west of the
Appalachian Mountains and the emergence of political and cultural borders within the
United States.
His interest in empires and borderlands as well as questions of power and consent led to
his collaboration with Fred Anderson in The Dominion of War: Empire and Liberty in
North America, 1500-2000 (2005) and to his current work, also with Fred Anderson,
“Imperial America, 1672-1764.” He is also the author of the forthcoming “Love in the
Time of Revolution” and has served as president of the Society for Historians of the
Early American Republic. Program Free, Regular admission fee for tours.

Historical Society. Speaker: Dave McKain presents “Women of Henderson Hall”,

April 9, 2013 – Annual Belpre Founders Day Dinner, sponsored by the Belpre
Historical Society. Speaker: Marty Seufer presents “President Abraham Lincoln”,

Pioneers Program”. Our goals are to perpetuate the ideals of the war for
independence; research and document the people and events of the American
Revolution; promote patriotism; and preserve the ideals of freedom. Our primary
search is for the Revolutionary War Patriots of Washington County, Ohio.
