Dear Parents,

Welcome to a great year! I am very excited to have your child in my class!

Morning Routine

It is very important that your child comes to school on time. School starts at 8:45 am each day. A free breakfast is served everyday in the classroom from 8:45 until 9:00. We will clean up breakfast at 9:00 a.m.

School policy is NO children inside the school before the first bell rings. Students need to remain outside prior to the first bell. If there is inclement weather they may wait inside in the foyer by the office or by the cafeteria. First graders use the northwest doors (by second grade classrooms).

Label Everything

Some sort of book bag or backpack to carry things to and from school is a good idea for your child. Please put your child’s name on EVERYTHING he or she brings to school in permanent marker or ink (backpack, book bags, coats, hats, gloves, water bottles etc.) Your efforts will make your child’s year more enjoyable.

Classroom Management Plan

My goal is to create a classroom environment of support and community. We will be talking as a class about kindness, respect, choices, and other attributes of good character to encourage the students to behave with respect.

Rules are very important in our classroom. As part of the school-wide behavior plan, the 4 R’s are as follows:

1. Respect for self.

2. Respect for others.

3. Respect for property.

4. Respect for learning.

We will talk about the rules we should have as a class. The basic class rules we will use are as follows:

1.

Follow directions quickly

2.

Only one person talks at a time.

3.

Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

4.

Make smart choices.

5.

Keep your dear teacher happy!

In our classroom we all make choices. The choices we make have consequences. When we make smart choices, we have happy consequences. When we make poor choices, we have unhappy consequences.

Birthdays

We like to recognize every student’s special day. Those birthdays that fall during the summer months will be celebrated on an assigned day during the school year. Your child may bring a treat for the class on their birthday if you wish. Keep in mind that district policy requires that all treats must be purchased from a

store or the school district and not baked at home. If you want to bring a treat to class on your child’s birthday, please let me know. We usually have our treats at the end of the day, around 3:00 or at lunch time.

Please do not send birthday party invitations for your child to pass out at school.

Toys

One of the school- wide recess rules is "No toys allowed at recess except the play equipment provided by the school." Toys brought to school create a real problem during class time. To avoid such problems please remind your child to keep toys at home. The only exception would be for a pre-arranged Show and Tell time.

Homework Plan

In first grade we request 10 minutes of reading each night. Because all children are different, not all children will be reading at the same level. A monthly calendar will come home at the beginning of each month. When your student reads 10 minutes he/she will color in the picture on the calendar for that day. Two or three weeks after school starts every child will bring home Sight Words on Monday to pass off later in the week.

Regardless of their reading ability, they are expected to study these words each night. They will also bring home math homework. As the year progresses and their abilities improve additional reading, spelling, and math homework will be sent home.

Homework Folders

Each child will be given a homework folder that they will be required to take home every night and bring back the next day. Students will earn a good-behavior ticket each day they bring back their homework folder signed.

Homework folders will not be sent home on Fridays. Reading for enjoyment is the only homework expected on weekends.

Weekly Newsletter

Each Monday I will put a newsletter in your student’s homework folder informing you of what we will be doing that week.

Book Orders

Book orders are sometimes sent home in the Homework Folders. This is a wonderful way to buy books for your home library because book order prices are less expensive than most bookstores. Young readers need many opportunities to read. This is one way you can help that happen at home. You can even order your books online!
