Complete responsibility for every aspect of the
operation and maintenance for the MATE1000 Physics
laboratory practicals and varying degrees of
responsibility for the operation and maintenance for the
other three 1st year physics teaching laboratory,
PHYS1171, PHYS1002 and PHYS1001. These duties
include:
Laboratories
o Member of the working group investigating the
redesign of laboratory space, planning and ongoing
development of laboratories and the design of new
experiments for the 1st year teaching laboratories.
o Working with course co-ordinators to update
existing and develop new practicals.
o Designing and organizing construction of
equipment, customised for specific experiments.
o Providing regular maintenance, minor repairs and
arranging major repairs. Where necessary, updating
equipment before and during semester to ensure
reliability of equipment for the students and the
smooth and safe operation of the laboratories.
o Maintaining supplies of consumable for all the 1st
year laboratory equipment.
o Sourcing and purchasing the most cost effective and
reliable equipment for the 1st year teaching
laboratories within the restrictive time demands of
practical timetabling.
o Ensuring equipment purchases are suitable, reliable
and comply with the requirements of the
experiment.
o Optimising the laboratory configurations, setting up
and testing the equipment for the various practicals.
o Ensuring the teaching laboratories and equipment
remains in a safe and clean condition, including the
furniture.

o Maintaining an inventory of 1st year physics
teaching laboratories room usage, equipment,
purchases and consumables.
o Managing, supervising and ensuring the return of
equipment loans to the Physics Demo Troup, UQ
Foundation, visiting school groups and other staff
members.
o Liaising with academic staff, administration staff,
tutorial staff and students.
o Liaising with the general and technical workshop
staff for the purchase and maintenance of all
scientific equipment.
o Providing advice to the course co-ordinators of the
1st year teaching physics laboratories for their
operation, maintenance and administration as
required.
Administration
o Complete responsibility for MATE1000 and partial
responsibility for PHYS1171, PHYS1002 and
PHYS1001 physics undergraduate laboratories
administration and organisation - in particular:
student contact, timetabling, student practical
session re-scheduling, laboratory manual and report
book updating and production, tutor training and
collation and verification of marks.
o Providing support for the academic team that
coordinates laboratory work in the 1st year
undergraduate courses.
o Organising the Occupational Health and Safety
induction for tutors and students.
o Maintaining Occupational Health and Safety records
for the tutors, students and the University’s OH&S
Risk Assessment database.
o Creating a “Tutor Expectation & Professional
Responsibilities” sheet for MATE1000 and
PHYS1171 tutors to guarantee all tutors are aware
of their duties and responsibilities to maintain
professional standards in the 1st year physics
undergraduate course laboratories.
