Grammar/Spelling – week 17
Common Core Objectives:
L.1.1e Use verbs to convey a sense of past, present, and future (e.g., Yesterday I walked home;
Today I walk home; Tomorrow I will walk home).
Essential Question:
What is the purpose of applying grammar and mechanics skills?

Standard/Lesson
Day 1
Reading Skill: Introduce Weekly Spelling Words
Have the students unscramble the spelling words. Use the website to create a
word scramble. Then print it off as a pdf and have them work together to
figure out the new spelling words. As a bonus, see if they can figure out the
pattern once they have unscrambled the words.
Day 2: Whole Class Activity
Reading Skill: Introduce Weekly Grammar Skill
1. Give Students weekly grammar rules to put in journal on left side of
journal.
Past Tense Verbs:
Verbs can tell about actions that already happened.
 These verbs are in the past tense.
 Add -ed to most verbs to tell about an action in the past.
 If a verb ends with one consonant, double the consonant and add -ed.
 If a verb ends with -e, drop the e and add -ed.

2. Under the rules, have them write an example of each.
The students worked on their science project.
The bubbles popped in the air.
She moved her book off the desk.
3. Diagram a sentence in journal using color.
Now that the list of colors is getting longer, I write them on chart paper
so the students can refer to them throughout the year. Then when we
write papers, I refer to the chart and tell them that they might need to
add some red to their writing or capitalize a blue since it is a proper
word.
The student copied the spelling words herself.
- Have them divide the subject and the predicate with a slash
mark.
- Have them underline the nouns in the sentence with blue.
- Have them draw a black triangle around the pronouns.
- Have them draw a black line back to the word the reflective
pronoun modifies.
- Have them circle the adjective with a red colored pencil and

draw an arrow to the noun it modifies.
Then have them find and circle the articles with a green colored
pencil.
Now have them circle the verb with a yellow colored pencil.
Day 3: Activity
Reading Skill :
Have the students complete the skill practice sheet. Have them paste it into their
journal. Check as a class and discuss answers.
