Second Grade Weekly Reading Plans Grammar/Spelling – week 18 Common Core Objectives: L.2.1d Form and use the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs (e.g., sat, hid, told). Essential Question: What is the purpose of applying grammar and mechanics skills? I can statement: I can write the past tense verb that goes with the present tense verb. I can correctly use an irregular verb in a sentence. Standard/Lesson Day 1 Reading Skill: Introduce Weekly Spelling Words Have the students unscramble the spelling words. Use the website to create a word scramble. Then print it off as a pdf and have them work together to figure out the new spelling words. As a bonus, see if they can figure out the pattern once they have unscrambled the words. Day 2: Whole Class Activity Reading Skill: Introduce Weekly Grammar Skill 1. Have them paste the rule paper on the left side of their journal. Some verbs do not have -ed to show they happened in the past. Some verbs change their spelling completely. Some examples of Irregular Verbs are: go - went see – saw blow - blew do – did eat – ate bite – bit hear – heard become – became break – broke (Use this as a reference http://www.myenglishteacher.net/irregular_verbs.html) 2. Under the rules, have them write an example of each. He will go to the store. He went to the store. Materials Unscramble Paper Rule Sheet for journal I see the birds in the tree. I saw the birds in the tree. See if the students can name other irregular verbs. 3. Diagram a sentence in journal using color. A little boy saw himself in the large mirror. - Have them divide the subject and the predicate with a slash mark. - Have them underline the nouns in the sentence with blue. - Have them draw a black triangle around the pronouns. - Have them draw a black line back to the word the reflective pronoun modifies. - Have them circle the adjective with a red colored pencil and draw an arrow to the noun it modifies. - Then have them find and circle the articles with a green colored pencil. - Now have them circle the verb with a yellow colored pencil. Colored pencils Day 3: Activity Have the students complete the skill practice sheet. Have them paste it into their journal. Check as a class and discuss answers.
