RAF CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS - 2009
1.
The 2008 RAF Cross-Country Championships will be held at RAF Halton on Wednesday 4 February 2009
commencing at 1400 hours; men’s and ladies’ races will start concurrently. General information and entry forms are
contained in this letter. A charge of £10 entry fee, per station, is required to help defray the cost of the
Championships. Cheques should be made payable to the RAF Athletics Association.
CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS
2.
The 2009 RAF Cross Country Championships will comprise:
a.
RAF Individual Championships for Junior1, Senior and Veteran2 Men and Women.
b.
RAF Inter-Station Championships for Men and Women.
MENS’ COMPETITIONS
3.
The RAF Individual/Veteran/Junior and Inter-Station Championships will be held concurrently. All selfaccounting stations in the UK are eligible to compete. There is no division between ‘Senior’ and ‘Junior’ stations.
a.
Individual.
(1) Stations may enter as many individuals in each category as they wish. However, RN, Army and
civilian personnel are not eligible for individual trophies or medals
(2) A trophy will be awarded to the winner of the race regardless of category.
(3) Medals will be awarded to the first 3 finishers in the senior men and veteran men categories; a
medal will be awarded to the winning junior.
(4) Runners registered as junior or veteran will be eligible for the senior men medals in addition to
their respective category.

A male runner over the age of 40 years on the day of the race; a female runner over the age of 35 years on the day of
the race.

Inter-Station.
(1) Each station may enter multiple teams in the Inter-Station Championships. A team comprises of
a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 nominated runners with the first 4 to complete the course
scoring points for the team. RN, Army and civilian personnel may compete as members of a station
team.
(2) A trophy will be awarded to the winning station.
(3) Medals will be awarded to the nominated runners of the first 3 teams.
WOMENS’ COMPETITIONS

ENTRY FORMS

An entry form is attached at Annex A. This should be completed and returned to the undersigned,
together with the entry fee by 16 Jan 09.
INVITATIONS
7. Station Commanders of competing stations are most welcome to attend the Championships. Officers IC Cross
Country Running are requested to inform the Championship Secretary RAFAA (Wg Cdr Ldr H Marsh, OC RAF
School of Physical Training, DCAE Cosford (95561) Ext 7999) should their station commander wish to attend.

REGISTRATION OF ENTRIES
9.
The registration of teams and individual competitors will take place in the Nuffield Pavillion between 1100
and 1315 hours. As approximately 200 runners will need to be registered, team managers and individual athletes
should declare their entries to the registration steward as early as possible using the Declaration Forms at Enclosures
1 and 2. Entries will not be accepted after 1315 hours.
10.
The registration steward will issue competitors' numbers to the team managers and individual competitors. It
is essential that the team managers declare their junior and veteran athletes as well as their Service.
11.
Competitors will not be permitted to take part in the race unless they are wearing officially allocated
numbers, which are to be pinned (top and bottom) to the front of the vest.
CAR AND COACH PARKING
12.
Vehicles will be directed to a sports car parking area to the south of the Nuffield Pavilion. Please do not park
outside the Nuffield Pavilion or the Coslett Stand. All vehicles should be registered with Guard Room Staff in the
normal way.
13.
The Coslett Stand car park will be reserved for official guests and competition officials.
ACCOMMODATION
14.
Accommodation at RAF Halton is extremely limited and all teams should endeavour to travel on the day of
the competition. Team managers requiring accommodation for their athletes should make arrangements for all ranks
through the Accommodation Cell (Ext 6163). Accommodation will be in the Home for Sport transit blocks.
MESSING
15.
RAF Halton employs the PAYD policy, any meals taken must be paid for by the individual taking the meal at
the time that the meal is taken. The only exception being the liquid refreshments (tea & Coffee) provided at the after
race presentation. Team Managers are requested to note that the RAF Athletic Association will no longer be providing
a hot meal after the event.
TRAVEL
16.
Travel at public expense is admissible for individual and team entries in accordance with JSP 752 Chap 4
Sect 8.
RACE DETAILS
17.
The men’s course measures 5.5 miles; it is mainly over grassland with some hard paths and is considered
suitable for spikes. The race will be contested over 2 complete laps plus approximately 600 yards of straight run
across the sports field from the start, and approximately 400 yards of grass straight to the finish. The women’s event
will be run over one lap of the men’s course.

Competitors are to wear their station colours in accordance with the ECCA Laws; failure to do so may lead to
disqualification.
MEDAL PRESENTATION CEREMONY
19.
Medals and trophies will be presented in the Nuffield Pavilion at 1600 hours. All competitors are expected
to attend the Trophy Presentation Ceremony.
