January 14-18, 2013 District Plan Palm Beach County - Literacy Events Ongoing District/School Events Pine Jog Elementary School - Top Secret Book – Each class will receive the same book wrapped in newspaper. Each day they will be given a clue about the book on the morning announcements. Students and teachers are encouraged to guess the book throughout the week. (This encourages students to think about text they have previously read, read new stories, and research the clues.) On Friday, we will have our school wide revealing of the book on the morning announcements. Students will create their own poster based on their favorite book. The posters will be displayed in the hallway. Classes are encouraged to tour the hallways and read about students’ favorite books. Professional development opportunities for teachers to learn about increasing student fluency through using before, during, and after reading strategies and focusing on vocabulary in their classrooms. Pine Jog Elementary School - Deliver Top Secret Book with Clue #1 Forest Park Elementary - Snuggle up with a good book and wear pajamas to school. (Promote reading each night before bed.) Begin a grade level book where each class adds on a new page to a story. Stories will be read on news next week. Roosevelt Middle School – Morning PA Announcement: The morning announcement will feature a different question about a famous author or a book genre. All email responses will be sent to Ms. Tamara Bell. The advisory class with the most responses will receive donuts on Monday morning. Take photos and display “Forest Park Takes the Lead and Reads!” Roosevelt Middle School – Morning PA Announcement: Famous Author Question Student-led book talks in Reading Classes (Reading teachers will select their best class to support this effort). All book talks will be captured on video and highlighted on the RMS News. Palm Beach Central High School – “Statistics on Literacy” announcement Bronco Bursts (Guest Readers in Classrooms) Santaluces High School Design a bookmark contest in celebration of Literacy Week. Submissions to Main Office for winner selection. Winning bookmark will be photocopied and distributed to all students. Dr. Weigel reads a quote from her favorite book/author. Buddy read with another class. Forest Park Elementary - Create a book mark of your favorite book and read, read, read, with your family and friends. Boynton Beach Fire Rescue will come with a hook and ladder truck. The principal will read and be lifted into the air to promote “Getting hooked on books in order to climb the ladder to success!” Roosevelt Middle School – Morning PA Announcement: Book Genre Question Vodcast: RMS Highlights on Literacy Week 2013 Taking the Lead by Celebrating Authors/Literary Characters: Faculty/Staff will participate by dressing up as their favorite author/literary character. (No student participation). Bookmark decorating contest winner announced and winning bookmark passed out to all students. Name selected from jar containing students who checked out a library book during the week. Prize will be a gift card to buy a book from selected store.
