CEDO Field Research Station and Laboratory Policies Anyone intending to do research at CEDO must complete and return a research application. All researchers are present on an invitation basis – acceptance of the application by the station is considered an invitation covering the specified time. All research activities on CEDO property must be approved by the Director and registered in the office as to location, organisms, manipulations/equipment, and duration. Note that collecting specimens in Mexico requires appropriate permits from appropriate federal agencies, including but not limited to SEMARNAT and SAGARPA. Copies of pertinent permits must be supplied to the Research Coordinator before arrival. Researchers and university or college classes working in the vicinity of Puerto Peñasco should be aware of the ownership of lands upon which they wish to carry out activities. The station has some maps of the area. Note that the estuary and beach are federal land, up to twenty meters above the highest tide line. Any projects involving excavation or removal of vegetation should always be discussed first with the landowner. The CEDO field station is on the outskirts of three areas under special protection in Mexico’s National Protected Areas Program: The Upper Gulf of California/Colorado River Delta Biosphere Reserve, the Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve, and the Island Refuge for Flora y Fauna at San Jorge Island. These protected areas require special permits from the Reserves for any research activities within their boundaries. In addition, the island reserve requires special permits for landing on the island. Scientists in residence (associated to CEDO) may qualify to conduct research on these lands as outlined in a permit issued to the Station by the Commission for Natural Protected Areas and the National Institute of Ecology. The director of CEDO has permission to sign and issue these permits. CEDO requests that proper credit be given to CEDO Intercultural in all publications of research carried out wholly or in part at the station. The investigator is asked to send two copies of any such publication to the Research Coordinator. Citation of these publications is included in the CEDO Bibliography and CEDO News and available on the CEDO website. CEDO houses a small collection of marine animals and any contributions to the collections are appreciated. Space is assigned by the Research Coordinator for researchers needing laboratory space. Policies regarding the use of the laboratory are as follows: 1. Store materials only in your designated space 2. All samples stored in the refrigerator or freezer should be properly labeled and stored in leak-proof bags. 3. When whishing to store samples long-term, first obtain authorization from the Research Coordinator. 4. Prior to using any equipment, researchers must submit a research protocol to the Research Coordinator and obtain authorization. 5. Researchers are required to bring all their supplies and consumable materials. Although CEDO has some supplies available, their use carries a fee above to cover the cost of transportation and/or import. 6. The lab should be kept clean. This includes wiping of benches and sweeping. 7. No dirty materials should be left in the sink. 8. Biological waste (fish parts, shells, etc.) should be properly disposed outside the lab.
