Presentation Overviews DB2 for z/OS Performance and Tuning Mainframe Application Performance Management has become even more imperative today with processor speeds approaching the theoretical limit of 7 GHZ. So just throwing hardware at performance problems is not enough anymore. Application response times and runtimes need to be tuned to run as efficiently as possible and often times when DB2 is a big player in the application, that is where most of the performance opportunities will be found. We will look at several DB2 tuning opportunities in CICS, Batch, and DDF; analyzing the SQL Text, the DB2 Access Paths, and the DB2 Catalog Objects involved. Common Performance Tuning Opportunities Andrew has worked with numerous companies across various industries to help them achieve their Application Performance Management objects. While every company is different, there are certain performance improvement opportunities that are consistently seen. Andrew will discuss some of the more common opportunities he has encountered and provide guidance on what to look for and how to resolve the issue. Turning Business Strategies into IT Realities With ever evolving business initiatives and strategies established executives, the ability to translate strategy into reality and effectively communicate the benefits and successes can be a challenge. How do you ensure that your mainframe technology platform is meeting this challenge to be more cost effective, secure and protect the critical information that is essential in todays on demand technology world? By optimizing the application life cycle with keen focus on development, testing and performance, Compuware Mainframe Solutions help organizations ensure the effective delivery of secure, high performing solutions. With the optimization of resources, utilization of Compuware's integrated tools can shorten development and test cycles, facilitate training new resources and speed troubleshooting which improves quality of service. By meeting business requirements, organizations can achieve service level goals and increase customer satisfaction. This lays the foundation for entities to realize reductions in operational costs, CPU usage, service level penalties and provides the ability to leverage current assets. Whether it is maximizing assets, reducing processor workload, continual testing for defects or ensuring test data privacy, this session will provide a discussion on strategy alignment and producing key metrics and measurements that will showcase examples of strategy alignment utilizing the Compuware platform along with a roadmap to the future. Speakers Mike Wingfield Mike has been in IT for over 35 years and has been working with DB2 since Version 1.1 in 1987 as a programmer, DBA, Tech Support, Data Modeler, Data Architect, and for the last 20 years as a DB2 Performance and Tuning Specialist. Mike has been utilizing Strobe since 1991 and has documented mainframe operating cost savings of over 50 million dollars using Strobe from 1994 through 2001. Mike retired from U S WEST (which became Qwest Communications and now Century Link) after 30 years of service. As a Strobe Solution Consultant for the last 10 years in Compuware’s Field Technical Support, Mike takes part in Application Performance Assessments for many Strobe customers throughout North & South America, Asia/Pacific, and Europe analyzing Batch, On lines, Stored Procedures, and DDF performance with Strobe and iStrobe and providing recommendations for runtime and response time improvements.
