FACT SHEET: APPLICATION PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT SERVICE
Achieve Optimum Performance for z/OS-based Applications
As mainframe applications become more customer-facing and connected to mobile and web devices, mainframe
transactions and MIPS are on the rise. Complexity also continues to rise as more compound and composite workloads
span multiple platforms and operating environments, making them extremely difficult to manage. Simultaneously, the
people with the most knowledge to help organizations manage these applications are retiring.
Combine all these trends and it’s likely your MIPS growth is out of control. Compuware's
Application Performance Assessment (APA) service will help you reduce your CPU consumption
— without adversely affecting service levels or incurring costly hardware upgrades.
Application Performance Assessment Service
The Application Performance Assessment (APA) service assists clients in achieving a higher
level of performance for their mainframe-centric business-critical applications.
Using Compuware’s industry leading products, Compuware’s experienced Delivery Consultants
work closely with a client's IT personnel to evaluate the efficiency of business-critical
applications, identify opportunities for improving performance and document the potential
savings that can result from implementing the recommended solutions.
With APA services, clients can not only improve application performance quickly and
effectively, but also gain the knowledge and skills necessary to implement and sustain a
process-oriented application performance management (APM) program based on Compuware’s
best practices.
Service Overview
The scope of an APA service offering is defined by the number of application components
evaluated. Application components are defined as online regions or batch job steps. An APA
service offering allows for evaluation of up to twenty application components. Additional APA
service offerings can be purchased if evaluation of additional application components is
desired.
The service is conducted over the course of two onsite visits by Compuware personnel
and consists of the following phases:
Initial Visit: The Compuware Consultant visits the client's site to verify proper installation of the
Compuware products; identify the application components to be measured and evaluated; and
assist in defining the service goals, scope, responsibilities, tasks and schedule. Additionally,
the Consultant will insure that a core group of the client’s personnel are versed in the best
practices concerning the use of the Compuware tools used during the service. The client then
measures the identified application components and forwards the resulting data to Compuware
for analysis.
Second Onsite Visit: After analyzing the performance data and identifying performance
improvement opportunities, the Consultant schedules a second onsite visit. Working closely
with the client's assigned personnel, the Compuware Consultant reviews the analysis to insure
the client’s personnel understand the best practices around APM analysis. The identified
performance opportunities are reviewed and potential solutions to reduce CPU consumption
and improve the overall performance of the application components are discussed.
APA Service Deliverable: The final APA service deliverable is an Application Efficiency Report
that summarizes service activities and findings. This report identifies and quantifies
application performance opportunities; includes recommendations for improvement based on
the results of Compuware’s and the client's research; and proposes guidelines for sustaining an
ongoing APM practice.
Optional Third Visit: An optional third visit is available for an additional fee. During the visit, the
Compuware Consultant returns to the client site to assess the progress made in resolving any
open issues or research items. The Consultant will update opportunity documentation,
document any outstanding issues and quantify results from any changes implemented. The
Application Efficiency Report will be updated and the report will be delivered to the Client a
second time.
