The new one-hour documentary from award-winning Anatomical Travelogue premieres on public television stations nationwide beginning September 1, 2007 (check local listings). In its quest to unlock the mysteries of the human heart, Stories From the Heart highlights the efficient system of newborns, uncovers the silent threat of hypertension and chronicles the nightmare of a cardiac event. It also delves into the tools and promise of modern medicine, the power of prevention and the hope of renewed health. Through the fascinating case studies, or “heart stories,” of a diverse group of people and complemented by stunning animations, Stories From the Heart takes viewers on an incredible journey through the human body to explore cardiovascular health inside and out. From the molecular level through the cells, tissues, organs and systems, these scientific visualizations deliver images of the human anatomy unrivaled in accuracy and artistry. The first segment tours the cardiovascular system from its beginnings in the womb to the highest limits of its function. A young couple allows cameras to capture the fetal development of their first child. Then, world-class kickboxing champion Emily Bearden illustrates her finely tuned cardiovascular system in action. The program also explores the aging cardiovascular system, which puts seniors — even those who lead vigorous, healthy lifestyles — at risk for hypertension and atherosclerosis. Then, through the cautionary tales of dangerously obese children, Stories From the Heart stresses the importance of developing a heart-healthy lifestyle at a young age and underscores the power of early intervention. In Louisiana, the documentary visits a cardiovascular center to learn what happens when people neglect their health. The case of a female patient who needs an immediate angioplasty illuminates the short path from hypertension to cardiac event. Renowned heart surgeon and best-selling author Dr. Mehmet Oz performs a dramatic bypass surgery on a patient overdue for treatment. Along the way, Dr. Oz shares his perspective on healing — of which surgery complements an array of techniques, including music, massage and yoga. -more- STORIES FROM THE HEART/2 PRESS RELEASE In the final segment, Elrod Hendricks, a former major-league baseball player and longtime Baltimore Orioles bullpen coach, discusses how he avoided brain damage from a stroke due to the quick thinking of the team trainer.
