Beginners' Latin, or GCSE Latin or an equivalent qualification

BA Classical & Archaeological Studies, BA Ancient History, MA Ancient History (also
postgraduate research programmes). Also available as a wild module to students in the
Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences.
11. The intended subject specific learning outcomes:
Students will be able to:
SLO1 show a knowledge of basic Latin grammar and syntax (as covered in
Wheelock's Latin up to Chapter 40).
SLO2 show a grasp of Latin grammatical terms and inflection systems, and the
underlying principles of the Latin language.
SLO3 show a command of Latin vocabulary (including nouns, pronouns,
adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions) covered in SLO1
and in prepared texts.
SLO4 translate straightforward sentences (Latin-English and English-Latin).

SLO5 translate simple unseen passages from Latin authors.
12. The intended generic learning outcomes:
Students will be able to:
GLO1 plan their work and organise their time over a year long module
GLO2 work together in a group
GLO3 study independently
GLO4 have a clear understanding of grammatical terms
GLO5 develop their command of clear, grammatical English
13. A synopsis of the curriculum:
Students will study:
[a] Wheelock's Latin 21-40.
[b] One or more Latin texts at the appropriate level (e.g. Eutropius, Epitome; Catullus,
selections; selections from the Oxford Book of Latin Verse) for prepared translation.
14. Indicative Reading List:
Frederic M. Wheelock & Richard A. LaFleur, Wheelock’s Latin, 7th edn. (Harper Collins 2011).
15. Learning and Teaching Methods, including the nature and number of contact hours and the total
study hours which will be expected of students, and how these relate to achievement of the intended
learning outcomes:
Three hours per week for 22 weeks, based on prepared work from the textbook or other Latin
texts at the appropriate level. (The teacher will vary the content according to the needs of the
students.) The coursework mark is derived from regular in-class tests. Students will have
three contact hours, plus nine private study hours per week.

16. Assessment methods and how these relate to testing achievement of the intended learning
outcomes:
40% continuous assessment via weekly exercises (all equally weighted), satisfying SLO1-4
and GLO 1-4
60% three-hour examination in the summer term, satisfying SLO 1-5 and GLO 4-5.
Unseen examination will assess:





command of basic Latin grammar and syntax up to Wheelock Chapter 40.
knowledge of grammatical terms and vocabulary.
ability to translate short sentences, both Latin-English and English-Latin.
ability to translate unprepared passages from Latin authors at the appropriate level.
ability to translate and comment on prepared passages from Latin authors.

All required resources are already available. Module texts will be purchased by the students.

18. The School recognises and has embedded the expectations of current disability equality legislation,

this module we will make reasonable adjustments wherever necessary, including additional or
substitute materials, teaching modes or assessment methods for students who have declared and

and specialist support will be provided where needed.
