Notes of the July 12th Library Council:
The revised food and drink policy was approved with minor additional revisions.
The new student employee guidelines, now in use, were reviewed by the Council and
accepted.
Organizational changes for the IUP Libraries were presented by Rena. (1) She proposed
that, effective October 1st, there be three major library units reporting to the dean: public
services, technical services, and media services/IDC, and she asked that faculty review
this proposal prior to that date. Some departments would remain separate and continue to
report directly to the dean: Special Collections, the branch libraries, and Media
Resources. IDC/Media Services is headed by a manager, Glenn Himes. Rena proposes
that Liz Evans head public services and that Rena head Technical Services. Public
Services would consist of reference, documents, and circulation. Technical Services
would consist of cataloging, acquisitions/serials, and collection development. This
structure would permit more communication within each of these units and sharing of
information across the all units. [A revised organization chart is attached, showing this
change.] (2) As an outcome of discussions with ILL and Circulation, ILL will become
part of Circulation, effective August 26th. ILL will continue to have its own supervisor
and staff and will assume responsibility for PALCI within Circulation. Service desks
may be combined. This will clarify the relationship between ILL and PALCI and create
more efficient services. (3) With the retirement of Shirley Trexler and Ron Steiner and
the transfer of Lynne Lucas to Stapleton, Rena has asked those in Media Resources,
Cataloging, and Acquisitions/Serials to consider re-locating the Media Cataloger to
Cataloging and the Media processing staff member to Cataloging and
Acquisitions/Serials. Further meetings are scheduled to discuss this idea.
A draft set of guidelines for the circulation of laptop computers was distributed and
discussed by Ed. They will be used now during a pilot program this summer, revised,
and brought back to the Council in the Fall when we start up a regular program of
circulating laptops to students.
Article topics were solicited for the Fall newseletter. So far, here are the topics: news
from the IDC/Media Services (Glenn); access to remote CDs, laptops, and new
computers (Ed); JavaCity is coming (Liz), closing of the University School (Lynne),
Docutek (Judy), JSTOR (Karen), Parent orientation (Blaine and Liz), and new microform
equipment (Joann). Others may also wish to contribute.
