A. PURPOSE:
The purpose of this document is to describe how to arrange an effective Rabies Awareness
Vaccination Campaign, to ensure compliance with the Animal Diseases Act of 1984 (No 35 of
1984), by trying to establish an immune animal population during awareness vaccination
campaigns.
B. SCOPE:
All ongoing Rabies Awareness Campaigns in Gauteng Province and is directed to reach
as many pets (dogs and cats) and their owners, as possible.
C. QUALIFICATIONS, ADDITIONAL TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
State Veterinarians and Chief Animal Health Technicians registered with the SAVC will
arrange Awareness Campaigns.

E. PROCEDURES:
1. Establish
the
type
of
campaign
you
want
to
have,
(street
to
street,
township/suburb/farm to farm) and your target area.
2. Arrange a meeting with the Ward Councilors of the area to look at maps together, they
can show you where all important public places are for possible venues, like schools,
clinics, sports parks, welfare organizations, private veterinarians, the SAP or
Community Police.
3. Decide on venues in the area together with the ward councilors. Ward Councilors will
also be able to arrange the venues for you, or at least give contact numbers for all
above mentioned public places.
4. Identify Primary Schools in the area as they are very good venues, make contact with
school Principals and ask for permission to use the school grounds for a campaign.
5. If schools are not available, contact clinics, police stations, sports parks est., and ask
for permission to use their premises for the campaign.
6. Print Pamphlets with campaign dates, venues and times.
7. Book Mobile unit.
8. Visit the schools in the area and distribute information on the disease, show the
Rabies DVD, and distribute pamphlets.

9. Make use of Ward Councilors to help with dissemination of Campaign information,
also distribute pamphlets at churches, shops est.
10. Use local newspapers to place pamphlet and local radio stations to spread
information. Start with this at least two weeks before the planned campaign.
11. Arrange your teams for the campaign; appoint team leaders who will be responsible
for equipment and vaccine. How many officials per team?
12. Make sure enough vaccine, needles and vaccination certificates are available.
13. Place posters at shops, schools and public places on the Friday before the campaign
starts.
14. During the campaign two officials can drive around and announce the campaign over
the public address system which is installed in each vehicle.
15. One official must be responsible to place posters every afternoon for the next two days
venues.
16. One official must be responsible to go to all schools in the target area every afternoon
and hand out pamphlets to all learners for the next day’s venues.
17. Two to three officials at each vaccination point to vaccinate.
18. Team leaders will report back on a daily basis to the campaign coordinator (CAHT).
19. Record all the details of the campaign on the Rabies Vaccination Campaign
Information Sheet
F. FEEDBACK AND CORRECTIVE ACTION PROCEDURES:
Feedback is given on Daily activity reports and monthly reports on vaccination figures.
Vaccination certificates serve as proof of vaccination.
